Hevi-Shot is to turkey hunting what Barnes TSX bullets are to deer hunting... You can go smaller diameter and still expect fantastic results...
I shot #7 Hevi Shot for turkeys and smash them with authority out to 40 yards!
Enjoying Each Sunrise...

I used to until I discovered TSS. I can be more effective with a 20 gauge youth gun now than I ever could be in the past with 3.5" magnum 12 ga loads with Hevishot. If a guy plans on keeping all his shots 40 yards and in, a .410 loaded with TSS 9's is more than enough. I haven't read very much about it on the campfire but I'm relatively new here. If you ever try it you'll go out that day and buy a small bore shotgun to hunt turkeys with.
For the small-bore doubters, I used to be one as well. It's kinda like a guy handing you a .243 scout rifle and telling you that it will do everything a .338 Laupa can do. Hard to believe until you see it for yourself.

I used to use Hevi-shot and other similar shot for years and had really good luck. Don't hesitate to try them. You may need to experiment with different chokes to get the best patterns but you will be pleased with the difference over Lead shot. The other "heavier than lead" loads are good as well like the Federal Heavyweight and the Winchester Extended range. I had the best luck with Mag Blends and Nitro shells but a buddy uses the Extended Range and has had good luck too.
I too have switched to TSS and it's amazing. Expensive but I chase turkeys in 7-8 states each year and the cost per shell is by far the least expensive thing I spend money on each year. I shoot it out of my 12 ga and my 20ga. I've killed to 76 yds with my 12ga and 71 yds with my 20ga. I absolutely prefer to shoot them at 25-30 yds but sometimes when you are chasing birds out west, the shots can get long.
Give it a try. Most people shoot 2-3 pattern shots per year and 4-5 shots at turkeys. The cost difference between a box of Lead turkey loads and a box of Hevi shot is about $15-20. You may not even shoot all of those in a year and the cost becomes even less. For an extra $1.50-2.00 per shot, I'd much rather have confidence in my set up and gain extra yardage for my "kill zone". Your mileage may vary though.

Ebby.. I presume Ur getting TSS from Hal? I too have killed birds way way farther than I care to admit and have not wounded a bird. Its all I run in my super bantam 20. Now in my 12's I been doing a lot of blending of both hevi and TSS as well as Hevi and HW (15g/cc) stuff. When u can consistently put over 300 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yds with a 3" shell in both the 20 and the 3" 12 ga. it makes ur confidence level skyrocket.
Have a good and safe season.

Yes Roy, I get my TSS from Hal. I have ordered from Tungsten Spheres when I've gotten in a pinch but you pay more thru them for sure.
The confidence is amzing with this stuff. I don't like to shoot them way out there and pass on a lot of shots that I know I can kill them at but it's nice to know that you've got it if you need it!
I have not done any of the blending. I do blend the TSS but have not tried the Hevi/TSS blends.
Good luck to you as well. Hope you have a good one.

I blended some TSS with Federal HWT 6's and 7's last year in some 12 ga loads after I cut open all my HWT shells to rob the shot out of them. Worked awesome. I don't have any hevishot to blend. I mixed some up the other night that were 5/8 oz TSS 9 under 5/8 oz TSS 8 under 7/8 oz of HWT 6. I've figured out that any combo that gets your total pellet count to 500 or more will be a nightmare for a turkey farther than you care to shoot at him.

I do. And as far as I'm concerned I'll not be switching anytime soon.
It turns my 20ga into a true 40yd stone cold killer. It patterns in my 12ga further than I'm willing to shoot a turkey with it.

Hevi 3.5/2.25/7s here.
Invector plus barrel with IC .665. Around 285 in the 10" at 40.
For you TSS 9 guys, what kinds of chokes are you running?

In my experience the choke isn't really critical with TSS. I use cheapo Carlson's flush fits to keep the extra length off my barrel. They cost about $14 each. That stuff seems to shoot well out of anything, including single shots with just a fixed full or modified. I had one friend with a mossberg bantam 20 that the Carlson's chokes did not do well with. He went from somewhere in the neighborhood of 210 in the 10" with it to 300 when he swapped over to Indian creek. I don't think it likes to be choked super tight though. The 8x9 duplex I shoot in a 20gauge puts 270 in the 10" and 230 more in the 20". That's a 20" diameter death ray for about as far as I want to shoot at one.
