I just picked up a Ruger 77/22 K-Hornet in a trade. The previous owner said that he had problems sometimes ejecting spent brass. He said that he �cleaned� the chamber but it had not fixed the problem. I placed one of my loaded rounds into the chamber and ejected it. The brass came out very scratched. I have no idea what the guy did to the chamber, but I need to polish it back to its original shine without removing much material.
Any ideas?

What direction are the scratches?
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.

The scratches appear to be parallel with the length of the cartridge. Hopefully, they can be seen in this photo. They run the circumference of the cartridge in two distinct rings. Is that a factory round? It looks like didn't get sized right. It would be interesting to have scope view or a chamber cast to look at.....or a polished case that's been fired.

You have a scratched chamber. You can polish it all day long, won't fix the forward scratch. It happens and sorry someone let it out that way. Setting it back is the best choice.

I was able to get in touch with the original owner today and asked him what he did to the chamber. He said that he used polishing compound on a patch-wrapped brush in the chamber. I think that XRingAccuracy is correct in that the only way out of this is to run a finish reamer into it.

I'd try another reamer first. The minor differences might just be enough to clean up the chamber. powdr
