I am looking for a scope for my AR 15. I want a scope that is about 2x on the low end and at least 10-12x on high power. I also want it to have a ballistic type reticle. The options from what I can see are kinda limited. zeiss has the HD 5 buts that an expensive scope as is the leupold vx6. Weaver has a couple options, and minox has the ZA 5, I have read mixed reviews on the ZA5 anyone around here have one?? I want 45+ FOV at 100 yards on low power, and 10-12x on high and I want to spend $500 or less any other suggestions.

Kudos for considering fov now rather than realizing it after purchase. It is often overlooked when shopping for a variable and seems even more pertinent when dealing with an AR.

I thought of the Nikon 2.5-10x42 Monarch BDC. I really like these reticles and price but it doesn't quite meet your FOV requirements.

The Weaver Super Slam 2-10x42 EBX fills the bill and might be my first choice. It can be had for a bit less than $500 if you shop and I always felt I got more than I paid for with Weavers. Every single one had superb feeling, accurate, click adjustments and were very bright.

The Minox has widest FOV. Price is similar. I thought the reticles a bit too thin for my tastes and like you have heard a few knocks on them- though plenty like them fine.

If weight is a factor know the Weaver will be heavier.

Here is a link to an article from John Barsness about the Minox.

Each sounds like a fit, that is, unless the previous poster can tell you how to get that Z3 for the price you set.

Oops. Sorry. Didn't see the $500 limit. I've seen them go in the classifieds for $700-ish.

6500 2.5-16x42 w/ MD ret would be a sweet scope. They are not all that heavy for a 30mm tube scope. Mine is comparable weight wise to my 4.5-14x44 Conquest scopes. My 2.5-16x50 6500 is a bit more beefy though. I suppose you could go with their ballistic ret as well if the MD isn't appealing. I see them used in your budget range on the various auction sites. I only paid 400 for the 42 and 510 for the 50. In that price range, it'd be tough to beat the glass.

this must be a gap in scope models. I really want to shy away from side focus and turrets. I would prefer a scope that is slim and trim in this application. I have other guns for cranking turrets and long range. I would go with the elite in 2.5-10 but all that comes with is plain reticle, the monarch has that bubble reticle that I don't really like either. so far the weaver super slam is looking good but I am not sure about that dot style ebx reticle they have.

there is one other that seems to fit the bill totally but its discontinued, burris six X, anyone looked at one??

I have to admit to liking the super slams despite my optics snobbery. I did have one that one that would wander POI about a MOA when dialed about 15 MOA. The other two I owned were pretty awesome.

That 2-10 Super Slam is hard to beat. The etched (EBX) reticle works fantastic for hunting as well as paper (circles and dots). My only complaint would be that it is a little heavy, 19ish oz I believe.

you guys are awesome. I went ahead and bought one of those weaver super slams. that is over a $100 bucks off dealer pricing at grafs, which is real dealer pricing. my only concern is if I will like the reticle or not.

I have the Nikon P-223 in 3-9 and for the money it's a good scope made for 223 AR platform. Think They have a 4-12. The P stands for pro staff and M for monarch. A lot of scope manufacturers offer AR scopes now days.i tested my BDC Out to 400 yards on some boulders and I was nailing them. I still need to set up plates out and really test it.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.
