I have always been a student of hard used firearms and tools. Grancel Fitz's rifle has often been misrepresented over the years. Craig Boddington even got it wrong this month in RIFLESHOOTERS magazine. He used a Remington model 30 with a custom stock by Griffin and Howe. Some state that he used only peep sights, yet from the pictures I have seen it is scoped. Does anyone have more info on this rifle?

Do you mean, like this? If you go to the bar just below the title, you can click on, "View Article", and it will download the .pdf of the whole magazine. It's toward the back, and there's a nice sketch of the rifle. h/t to Ready for finding this article. FC

Great read. Thanks for the tread.

I have a magazine-like book entitled "How To Measure and Score BIG-GAME TROPHIES" by Grancel Fitz. It's an Outdoor Life publication. The forward, written by Jack O'Connor, is titled "THE MAN & THE SYSTEM" and near the end Jack says..."He {Grancel} did all of his North American hunting and most of his foreign hunting with one ancient Griffin and Howe version of the Remington .30/06 which must now be well over 30 years old. Last time I saw it, it was still wearing the same old Hensoldt 2 3/4X scope it began life with."

Grancel Fitz's rifle was discussed in a 2009 campfire thread: Critique Grancel Fit... Illustrated September 21, 1959. The thread included an copy of the drawing of the rifle that accompanied the SI article. The image is still in photobucket. . . --Bob

A lot of truth to what he says but It undermines my hobby. Sure it can be done with one gun but that know fun, besides what would I do with all my spare time and money
