A 'Hercules' 20 gauge single shot. Montgomery Wards.
Dad gave it to me when I was about 10 I think. Still have it, one of my most prized possessions. The joy I felt...

1948 Marlin 39-A $50.45 (MSLP) Red Lion, Pennsylvania (first one all mine kid brother and I had earlier "gone halvies" on a Springfield single-shot .22 $9..)
Put a 4x Weaver on it and brought beaucoup groundhogs and gray squirrels in to the frying pan and stew pot. Head-shot, all except one running squirrel.
Have had seven more of 'em through the years. All have had the same incomparable magic, even though the workmanship declined badly as the years went by.
If I were able today, I'd look long and hard at the Henry. Probably get one immediately and keep it hot continually.
"Good enough" isn't.

The Mayans had it right. If youre going to predict the future, its best to aim far beyond your life expectancy, lest you wind up red-faced in a bunker overstocked with Spam and ammo.

1964 I worked all summer in the locker plant, saved up enough to buy a shotgun. I wanted the new Winchester 1200 but Dad had a friend he worked for on weekends who had a model 12 Featherweight (never taken out of the box) in the back room of his store that I could buy for $88.
