67 chevy step side. Got about 6 or 8 mpg with a small block V8 and 4:10 gears. Still have it but it needs restoring.

dvdgeorge; Thanks for the interesting thread sir, it makes for some good viewing and memories for me as well. My first car was a 4 year old '74 Astre GT that I picked up at an auction. I sold a couple dirt bikes to pay for it as I recall. For those 'Fire folks who've not seen an Astre, this was the Canadian made version of the Vega. In short order I bought a slightly wrecked '65 Impala SS convertible with a 283Cu" SB in it - the idea being it was going into the Astre GT. I had a local engine rebuild shop bore it .0040", balance it all and reassemble with new internals. Of course back then I had no idea how rare a '65 Impala SS was going to become, so I yanked the motor and transmission out and sold it to a buddy for $100 and a good Quadrajet carb. He was a decent body man even in high school and restored it to it's original glory by the way. Thanks again for the interesting reading and pleasant memories this morning sir. All the best to you and yours this weekend. Regards, Dwayne

1941 Chevy 2 door coup. 6 with a split manifold and dual exaust. 3 on the floor and chrome wheels.
Bought it from my older Brother for $150. Traded it for a motorcycle before I was old enough to drive it legally.
First "driver" was a 1961 Chevy 2 door post.
Next was a 1965 Baracuda....And they kept coming! Traded rigs almost every year 'till I got to be about 30.

'73 chevy luv, yellow, just like this one. tis one is a '77 but it is identical, right down to the yellow paint, and front hinged hood. I drove it all over the woods around home, never had a speedo or odometer,so no idea how many miles I put on it,all it had was a tach, mounted out in the middle of the hood. it was an Isuzu,at least that is what it said on the top of the motor. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3086839/1977-chevrolet-luv-pick-up/

bucktales; For what my sample of one is worth, I'll say this about that, after I apologize for not being more clear in that I never did get the rebuilt 283 into that Astre. In '83 or so, I got to drive a Vega GT of the same year and paint scheme as my first car. The stripe on the Vega was white maybe, but anyway otherwise it was close. The chap had a pretty strong 327 SB in it for those days, a turbo 350 transmission with a shift kit and what must have been a Monza rear end. I can't recall what if any mods were done to the front end suspension and therein lay the proverbial rub. We took it up to about 100 mph which was a fast trip, but as I was sitting squarely on the highway center line by then and struggling to stay there I shut it off and called the experiment done. Oh, hard braking at 60 mph or less really made the thing nose dive in spectacular fashion. Doing any slalom courses were very much out of the question for that particular vehicle. Anyway sir from that experience I'd say to take any prospective home built V8 Vegas on a thorough test run before making the decision. While driving what I'd thought would be my "dream project car" might not have been exactly a cathartic experience for me, it was educational to say the least. Hopefully sir that was at least amusing to you if not helpful. All the best to you this weekend. Regards, Dwayne

First four wheeled vehicle was a '57 Buick Roadmaster. Black on black. Cost me $120. Automatic that had to be shifted manually which was "cooler" anyway.

1971 Toyota Celica. 113 cubic inch OHC four banger rated at 110 HP. I had a good set of Michelin XZX's on it and I drove the hell out of it. It looked just like this one when I got it. But after running it to the end of numerous 4x4 trails it was not so pretty. My buddies quickly learned to not say "You can't get this car there", because I always did. That was the first of about a half dozen Celicas I have owned. It broke my heart when they converted to FWD in 86. I have not purchased one since.

If I remember correctly (and at this point I'm not sure if I do) a 1934 Ford my father picked up somewhere. Believe it or not it had mechanical brakes that had to be adjusted every weekend. Used to wear out some shoe leather getting it stopped. It wasn't around for very long.
