I bought this gun sevearal years ago as a birthday present to myself and it was just too nice not to buy it when I saw it. It has basically been been a safe queen ever since. The pictures below were the ones from the original ad on the internet.

It is a second year lefty Savage action in .270 with the nicest stick of walnut I have ever seen. Being a Mannlicher stock did not hurt either. It is perfect in every way, appears unfired and the level of craftmenship really impressed Craig Libhardt when he did the work. I have no idea who did the original work.

18 months ago I had Winchester supergrade sling eyes installed by Susquehanna Stockworks in preparation to making it more of a hunting gun. As they say, life is too short to hunt with an ugly gun.

Now I need to decide what bases, rings and scope to get for it and I'd like to hear people's ideas.

What say you?

Either a 4X33mm Leupold, or a 6x36mm Leupold. I'd probably lean towards the 4X. If you could find one, a 4X Zeiss would work, too. I like the low Talley lightweights for rings. Gorgeous Savage, by the way.

How do you feel about fixed vs. quick detachable?

If you're addressing me, I like the steel Talley quick-detachable rings the best. Strong and very handsome. But I also like the DNZ one-piece ring/base system, though some people think they're ugly. I like them.

Wow, that is nice. I dig the leupys but that fine rifle deserves a Swarovski...
Maybe a 6x42 or 4x32 habicht? S & K mounts.....
Less is more with the rings with that gorgeous wood.

Romac,

If you're going to be hunting PA hardwoods, put a Zeiss 1.5x-6x in Talley ring on it.

First off. That has to be one of the prettiest Savages I have ever seen. Congratulations on a nice snag !

As far as scope, KISS: 4x33 fixed, or 2.5x8x36 variable, Leupold Dual Dovetail bases, low or extra low DD rings. IIRC, the older Savage long actions were "looong" between the scope bases. Might need an extended front base to get the front ring back far enough to mount a short tube scope.

If you will spend a lot of time hunting hemlock, laurel, or creek bottoms, a wide duplex or German #4 reticle might make it easier to pick up the cross hairs on overcast days. I lived in Wyoming County from '88 to '92. Have many fond memories. But, can't recall a lot of bright, clear, blue bird days during deer season in PA.

long time looker, new time joiner; but enough about me....

That is an ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL rifle!!!

I'd put a Leupold FX-II 4x (or M8 if you can find and actually win one on flea-bay), or the VX-3 2.5-8x36. That'll compliment but not detract from the beauty of that thing. Wow, did I mention how pretty it is?

Yep, and that is why the S&K mounts would be so perfect.

Very nice Savage! While I originally liked the Swarovski suggestion I now think I would suggest keep everything really simple, beautiful and American. So I would suggest Talley rings and base's and a 6x36 Leupy.

That would be a classy piece,

Rog,

I wish I would have convinced you to sell me that gun a year or two ago when you were even willing to talk about it!!

I'd go with S&Ks or maybe Conetrols as well if they make them for the 110.

I agree with most that less is more. I would go so far as to consider having some bases made if you could not find something that you thought looked nice enough.
