When we moved to Prescott, it was "PRESSc't." Then outsiders bulged the town bigger, and it became "PRESS-COTT," with heavy stress on the -COTT.

Fathom was also a favorite word of my friend who mangled usurp and others, and of course underwent her special twist she couldn't phantom this, couldn't phantom that, couldn't phantom the other thing, etc.

I got used to it after a while.

So many people now days will use the word 'dude' when addressing a female.

For the record 'Boss' is prison lingo for Sorry SOB backwards.

The most irritating 'correct' speaking that drives me nuts is Alex Trebic pronouncing things. Ghetto and Hillbilly is many times less annoying than that stuff. I don't watch a lot of Jeopardy due to timing but when I do he always pulls at least one SOB out of me.

I sold guns and optics for years. Trust me when I tell you not to try and understand Swarovski customers.

Or for that matter Leupold ( Lee-up-hold)

I have also heard, frequently I'm afraid, of Hog-a-don gunpowder, and Eye-Mister Powder ( IMR)

locals here with that name pronounce it the first way.

The French have some pronunciation quirks that Americans have trouble with.

French words and names (I don't know of any exceptions) stress the latter or last syllable. The daughters of some of Carol Anne's friends were something like DiNEES ReNAY and MiSHELL JoZETTE. Ka-LUMP Ka-LUMP and Ka-LUMP Ka-LUMP.

So Beauchamp would be "Bo-SHAW[n]," with the nasal sound of "Shawn" without the terminal n pronounced. That unpronounced n just gives its nasal twang to the aw of -champs and the -mps is totally silent not sounded at all.

Just don't sound natural to American ears!

Yeah, PRESSc't is a more accurate pronunciation than what I gave. I live in Flag, but it comes up a lot with people who are new to AZ. I've had many a conversation that started by someone asking "So, how do you pronounce Prescott?"
