Just finished shooting some loads through the Crono.
160gr Woodleigh PPSN with 71gr H570 3 shot average 3083 fps.

130gr JLK VLD with 64gr H4831 3 shot average 3095 fps

130gr JLK VLD with 65gr H4831 3 shot average 3133 fps

130gr JLK VLD with 66gr H4831 3 shot average 3198 fps

130gr JLK VLD with 67gr H4831 3 shot average 3239 fps

Will take advice on better powder on the 130gr JLK VLD

I've wanted a 264 for 30 years now!

160 PPSN at nearly 3100fps has given me another nudge in that direction.

thanks Jim

Out of the 3 shots it read 3052, 3108, and 3088 on the 160gr PPSN which is probably me spilling a gr of powder or because the H570 is very old. as the price was less than 2 dollars a pound when it was purchased. I am thinking that caused the low reading.

I have been feeding my 264 130 grain Scirrocos with 67 graine of Retumbo. Out of my 26" barrel that gives 3225 fps. I am happy with this load and not trying to improve on it for now.

Unless you have a source for H-570 (it was discontinued long ago) when you run out of your supply you will need to work up a new load.

A newer powder that would I would be looking at (if I could find it) is Reloader-33. It is said to have a progressive pressure curve and might squeeze a little more speed out of "overbore Magnums" like the 264.

Waterrat,

You may want to wait a little longer as Nosler is bringing out a new 6.5mm. They are calling it the 26 Nosler. Goggle it. It has more powder capacity than the 264 and claims of more speed.

Just food for thought

I have 3, lbs. of the H570 so I will use it on the 160gr PPSN and push it up to 73grs of powder and try to hit 3150fps. It is a safe powder to play with. I have read that they say you can pack the 264 case full and still be safe but not that brave. The 160 gr bullet at 3083fps still has 1766 ft. lbs. of energy at 500 yards and a nice flat trajectory if zeroed at 350 yards with 19.1 inches low at 500 yards.

Barnes is releasing a new 127gr LRX (Long Range X, actually a TTSX with a longer ogive and boattail) that will have a BC approaching .500

If I was shooting anything in .264 caliber I would try to get my hands on some and see if they would shoot in my rifle. Velocities in the 3300+ range with a high BC Monometal would make one heck of a nice combination.

The Woodleigh 160gr has a .509 BC. And the JLK 130gr has a .620 BC.

Those are good, but I will take a slightly lesser BC for the unbeatable terminal effect of the Barnes. Combine that with the speed one can get from the 127 LRX and I think they are worth a look.

Regardless of what you choose for a bullet, I sure do like your caliber of rifle. I will never understand the draw of the small 6.5's when the 264 Win MAg fits through a 30/06 length action and is so VASTLY superior.
