I know that there are some folks in Texas and Oklahoma that remember Gibsons. It was Wal-Mart before there was a Wal-Mart.
They had the best sporting goods department of anywhere and best of all they had guns. Lots of guns.
I used to ride my bicycle there to but fishing lures. I would also gawk at all of the rifles they had.
I have to say,I have fond memories of Gibsons.
And I'm lucky that there is one of the two Gibsons in Kerville. The other one is in Weatherford. The first time I went there was a couple of years before mt Pop died. He was just like me when we went there. We looked at everything in the vast sporting goods department.
I was ar Okie's home a few months ago and he remembers Gibsons like I do. And I had to rub it in a little bit.
For y'all that remember... I give you GIBSONS.

Actually, I thought that chain had closed.. It started in Kansas I believe.

And yes, I remember them. My mom bought my first handgun for me when I was 18 there in 1979,. Stainless Ruger Single Six.

Walmart was down the street and even though Gibsons was an Older smaller store, it had a WAY better Sporting Goods dept. Lots of El Paso Weaver and Denver made Redfield Scopes And a few Trashcos thrown in the mix.

It's a damn shame they could not compete with Walmart on a grander scale..

I remember Gibsons very well in the 70s in MN.

They had guns, and that was cool.

There's still one in Weatherford, TX, (as you mentioned)that has lots of guns. Pretty neat store. Used to be one in Desoto when I was growing up. Fond memories of that place. The K-Mart ended up shutting them down, then the Wal-mart came to town a few years later.

Used to go to the one in independence, Kansas often growing up. Think it closed in the late 90s. Dad has shotgun shell boxes with gibsons price stickers on them from 80s I'd guess. Reloaded a few times.

I've been in the Gibson's in Kerville. It is an amazing collection of stuff. I'd love to replace the local Walmart superstore with a store like that Gibson's in Kerville!

I grew up in DeSoto? It's nothing like it was when I grew up there.

Had one in Shawnee, OK. It was multi story and had the best toy department around, on floor 2.

Being a little tike at the time, that's all I cared about.

It's actually pretty good. They have probably 60 or 70 guns out on display. Maybe more if you count the hand guns. They have had more in the past couple of years though. They have powder, bullets, and dies. They have a big selection of scope mounts and rings but not very many scopes.
