As soon as I read the post that started this thread, I remembered the smell of the popcorn that would hit me when walking into the Gibsons store where I grew up. I didn't remember the Icees until I saw the post I quoted above, but our town's store had the Icees too. As others have mentioned, there were Gibsons stores in Arkansas in the 1970's, and my father still has some ammo he bought at Gibsons back in the day.

Interesting Gibson's memory.

When I bought my Leica scope a couple of years ago, Camera Land had a trade in program to discount it. I sent two to make sure they had a usable scope for the kids. One of those two was a Gibson's fine plex in either 4 or 6 power. I had owned it since I was a kid in the 70's but it had been in a box for twenty years.

We had Gibsons here too Bart. I used to buy a lot of sporting goods from them both here and in Bozeman.

He would have graduated in 76 or 77 and was a pretty good football player so I thought you might as that it was a lot smaller place back then.

My dad would take me to the Gibson's in Chickasha, Ok. That's where he would buy his fishing tackle like Storm lures pre-rapala. I loved that store.

I remember that station. We used to get our hair cut by "John the Indian" at the barber shop in the strip mall immediately to the south (between the station and north of Gibson's/Winn-Dixie).

Marlin 39A for $99 in the '70s back in Iowa. Wish I had bought a few, or at least one of them instead of the Rem .22 auto I bought instead.

Just bought a box of power max 30-06 Winchester shells from them in weatherford the other day. Bought a pallet of sod a few years ago. They have everything and I love to just roam around the store.

Still have a box of Norma 6,5x55 bought in 1986 at the Brunswick GA Gibson store. $18 and change... thought the wife was gonna kill me as that was some high priced ammo back then.

We had bought Norma ammo from them in the late sixtys for the old Mausers they sold there. That was some cheap ammo, just a couple of bucks a box. Gave me the impression at the time that Norma was some cheap assed third world ammo in the wood grained box.

Memories, good old memories.. but damn, I can't remember what happened yesterday frown

My old man still has some NIB ammo with Gibson price tags from the 1960's & a metal 8 lb keg of Red Dot with a $15 Gibson Price Tag.

The sad thing is that if you really think about it, that is about the same price as an 8 lb. can of Red Dot today.

There was a Gibson's in Boonville, Missouri in the early 70's. I was too young to remember if there was a gun counter but I still have a steel toy semi truck that came from that store when I was 6 or 7 years old.

There was one in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and it also had a great guns and sporting goods department. I can remember buying cases of Federal Field Load shotgun shells there for $50 out the door. And that was when a case was 20 boxes, not 10 as today. We've got a couple of Ithaca/SKB shotguns we bought at Gibson's. I used to drool over the Ithaca LSA-55 and LSA-65 bolt action rifles in there. I've got a can of Herco powder on my shelf now that came from there.

Been to the one in Kerrville a few times as it is not far from home. Caught an outdoor clearance sale on one trip and bought a fair bit of fishing stuff. Neat store.
