I'm thinking of thinning the gun safe because I am city living now and don't shoot or go back to the family farm as much as I used to.

So I will give you the stories on 3 of my magazine loading 22's that I carry in the pickup for a fast shot on farm varmits. You give me a 1st and second choice on which one to sell AND why.

77/22 - laminate heavy barrel
got it for $275 a few years ago on a 60% off sale.
Shoots gwell - similar weight to my deer rifle and predator rifle. Tough to part with, but almost too nice to bang around the truck

Rem 511 - classic bought for about $175 recently. New enough to have a grooved receiver. Shoots alright and I need to hone the trigger a bit. Matches my score master single shot that I will not sell. Set up is similar safety to my remm 700 safety wise.

plain 10/22 carbine paid $125 used Put voltquartzen extractor and target hammer in it by a gunsmith, but it isn't as reliable now with magazine feeding issues and occasional failure to eject. Need to give the mags a good cleaning to see what the problems are. As much as I like it for a quick carbine in the truck, I tend to shoot fast more than aim and have a couple bx-25 mags that I panic bought at $35 each. So I have about $200 - $250 into this. Could keep the mags for the 77/22 although that looks goofy with 25 rounder hanging out of it...

So which one goes first? and then second? and why?
Oh..I'm NOT a squirrel hunter. Yet. If that helps.

I've owned all three. I still have a 77-22 sporter and 10-22. I like them both.

A few years back I bought a pretty good 511 for sentimental value. My first gun was a 511. I couldn't shoot it as well as the Rugers that both had trigger work. I tried honing the sear and replacing the trigger spring on the 511 but couldn't do much with it. Two gunsmiths said in their opinion there's not too much that can be done with the older 5 series Remington 22 triggers.

For the use you describe and the way you say you like to shoot I'd sell the 511 first, The 77-22 next and use some of the money to get the 10-22 reliable.

I would keep the one that works well, the 77/22 and for that reason alone. I imagine it is considerably more accurate as well, but that's a WAG.

Humdinger: I own all three of the Rifles you have to choose from, and I enjoy them all VERY much.
But the Ruger 77/22 V/T heavy barrel would be my "choice" to keep, hands down!
I hope you can figure out a way to keep all three - maybe leave them at your parents house or a friends home near where you do much of your shooting.

Good input guys. The 77/22 is the keeper for the moment until I play with the other two and decide when to pass them on. My gun collection has gotten out of hand so I want to thin a few out every year until I have what I absolutely love. My Marlin 39A isn't going anywhere and my apache black 66 wont because that is almost a retirement fund how expensive they have gotten.

My go-to .22's are also a Marlin 39A, Nylon 66 and an Anschutz.

I think you're crazy if you don't keep the 77/22.

I agree to keep the 77/22. Have you seen the price of those lately? Never have too many, how about another safe??? grin

Well thats part of the problem...I'm into the second safe and I need to contain my gun buying crazy a bit! I've gotten to the point I really enjoy shooting some and the rest seem to get neglected. Could turn them into a nice o/u for trap shooting!

More thoughts...
Highest profit potential on the 77/22
moderate profit potential on 511 and hard to ever replace
some potential on the 10/22 and easy to replace. Maybe not - this has a metal trigger assembly. good project rifle.

hmm.. its seeming like the most recent baby made be the first to go... 511.

Put the original parts back on the 10/22 and sell that off. They are cheap, plentiful and still being made if you decide to get back into 10/22's. The others are less common/plentiful and have more potential.

That sounds like a good plan. I am with the others on keeping the 77/22. Those are very expensive now to replace and just a great .22.

If the 77/22 shoots to your expectations that is the one to keep. Not all do. 10-22's are plentiful.

Foolish idea?

I don't know about all you guys, but when I scoped my dads old 511 it out shot my Anschutz by a slight margin, and that's no easy task. Trigger was not great either.
It sounds like the 77/22 may be the one to keep. I'd keep the one that suits the task best and let the others go. It's not like any of them can't be replaced.

I'd sell all of them then buy a Savage bolt gun in .22LR. It'll be more accurate and not as 'pretty' so you won't mind it banging around in your truck.

I've had/have all the guns you're sorting thru. I'm also in a serious downsizing mode. Even though I used to collect some Rugers, I was originally going to say to keep the Remmy, because you use a 700 and have the single shot. But an issue I've considered when downsizing is potential to replace. The 10/22 is everywhere and easy to replace. The Remington would also be pretty easy and reasonably priced to replace. They would also be relatively easy to sell. The Ruger would be harder to find and more expensive, but could get more money for the shotgun. It might be a bit tougher to sell because it involves more money. Memories also play in the mix. Times at the range and in the field and with friends count too. It's pretty hard to let some of them go. Hmmm. Tough one. I'd lean to the Ruger to keep, I think.
