do you know your rifles trajectory?Yes - Note that piece of masking tape on the front of scope.

340 mag. I don't normaly bash people on here for anything. But I this case I'll stray. Why in the [bleep] are you shooting that far by guessing the range. Kill or no kill, if I'd been your buddy I'd have wrapped that rifle around your neck. And considering you got busted in the head "not hard enough" tells me you haven't practiced that shot. You might as well been out there with a CAR15 with irons and a 30 round mag. Then I would have understood your stupidity. I read thru this a few times, before I responded,I would generally ignore posts of this type but some readers might want more info, that you find a true story about what happened nearly 40 years ago, not up to your personal standards,is more your concern than mine. I doubt theres a single person with 45 plus years of hunting experience, hunting out of state that can,t look back on dozens of less than ideal past actions, or early hunts in your career that could have been improved, if you had the experience you gained years later.. I guess some of us who bother to post the truth about what they did and experienced ,might not be perfect....as I'm sure you've never made a mistake.. Id point out that at the time I was about 22 years old and we all learn from our mistakes and experience. yes your correct that I should have gotten closer and letting the excitement of a hunt and opportunity of making a shot on a large antlered mule deer, allow you to rush the set-up and get tagged with a scope during recoil is hardly unique for a 22 year old on one of his first few out of state hunts. As to guessing the range, the appearance of the cross hairs in the scope, against the target allow you to make an educated guess, not ideal, but far from a wild ass guess and the fact that I hit with-in a few inches of the intended point of impact on the first and only shot taken , and dropped the deer, indicates my estimate was very close to correct. As I've posted several times previously, Ive shot easily 80% of my elk and deer at well under 250 yards many at under 70 yards, that doesn,t mean I don,t practice regularly at longer ranges and know my equipments limitations and capability's http://www.gunclubofamerica.com/bet...f-range-finding-with-your-scope-reticle/ Sorry I was a little harsh. I just know that at that range, a 50 yard mistake is a 10" mistake. My hunting group shot 3 this year with there front leg blew off and 5 others that were gut shot. Sorry I took it out in you.

My brother had the sanest idea on bullet trajectory for the two rifles he took to Africa on his hunt. A 30-06 and a 338 WinMag. He loaded both rifles to a very similar velocity and bullet path, so that it didn't matter which rifle he chose, the flight path would be very similar. It worked for him. He took six nice plains animals. I have made efforts to do the same thing with my reloading ever since I bought my second rifle in 1979. A lot of hunters are very surprised that dissimilar cartridges will shoot very similar trajectories with a bit of thought as to bullet choice and powder charge. This is a representation of my rifle cartridge selection and loads available. ................................................................................100 yd .. 200 yd .. 300 yd .. 400 yd .. 500 yd 22-243 AI .... The next barrel on my Savage 22-243 AI will be fast twist so it can handle a heavier bullet. Then that trajectory can be tuned right in with the rest of my hunting rifles.

I maximize the effectiveness of every chambering/boolit I shoot and could give a schit less, how it compares to something else I have in the herd. No schit a +4" 100yd "zero"?!?
I've zero interest in schit boolits,at schit speeds, with a schit zero,so as to make everything schitty. Always fascinating to watch folks pull spark plugs and then honk the horn.(grin)
So...ummm...yes,I've some familiarity with more than a few zero's on more than a few rifles and their downrange behavior(s).
Understatement +P+.

What's the 100 yd trajectory on that 7-08 sans turrets?

I can't much like anything higher than 2.5" at 100yds.
A 162'Max at 2700fps launch,will zero at 225yds when 2.5" high at 100yds,with 1.5" sight height in standard atmosphere at 2500' ele. 1000yds is a sub 28MOA correction,full value 10mph wind is sub 6.5MOA,remaining velocity is 1500fps+ and "energy" is 825ft lbs.
For conversation, the STW load you cite zero'd at 250yds,gets to 1K with 20.7MOA,6.2MOA full value 10mph wind,1658fps and 988ft lbs. In the above atmosphere/sight height.
More conversation. I shoot my 7WSM's with the 'Max at 3150fps and a 250 zero. 1K drop is 19.1MOA,wind 4.9MOA full value 10mph,1850fps and 1232ft lbs of "energy". Same atmosphere/sight height.
Gonna try turrets some day,as it seems like some guys like 'em.

I, and the crew I grew up shooting with never could get away from that 300 yd zero. We hunt the same terrain year after year, and 90% of our shots are 250 to 400 yds.
Tried a few turreted scopes, but my budget did not allow me to go where they could be reliable.
If a guy is slumming Bushnell and Burris, he's best off to forgo the gadgets.
With a bit of practice a fellow can learn to kill even little bitty ground squirrels at various ranges via appropriate hold under.
That WSM load is pretty impressive. The 160 Amax is slippery, and I think I heard somewhere that it kills stuff pretty well also.
If I was not so inexplicably fond of this #1, I could sell it and get a 700 in 7WSM. But the STW has not failed me yet.

I zero'd all my 257Wby's at 300yds,but again...the midrange was slight,due to modest 100yd height.
Shot alotta 120's crowding 3800fps in my STW's,back in The Day,which was pre-LRF. Have had multiple No 1's,but never in STW,mine were bolt guns. My B-78 7mmRemmie was Skookum. All of which, was of course prior to the advent of S/S OEM offerings.
I've more than a whole buncha faith in a 7-08,wayyyyyy past distances thus far cited.(grin)

Wind is spelled "SWAG". Yesterday was a literal breeze, with 1/3 Mil full value influx at the 750yd line, via 75 HPBT's from a 2800fps initial Krunchenticker Launch. Funny how it works.
