The wind storm we had last night blew a bunch of 3-tab shingles off the roof. The roof is in need of reshingling and that was planned for this spring/summer.

Is patching with roll roofing an OK way to put off the job until at least April?

I'd say yes, for around here. But high winds and lots of rain aren't what we're known for. It's just six seeks or so....how bad will your weather be between now and then?

No way of knowing the weather this year!

I just want to avoid water under shingles and getting through the tar paper.

That's a point....We've got houses in the wet part of Texas that have been using blue FEMA tarps for years. Six weeks can't hurt. Nail 1x4s all the way around the edges to keep the wind out.

LOL! my first thought was if I had a tarp big enough or should I head to Trusty and get a fancy new one!

The bonus is it wouldn't be seen from the road.

Happened to me 3 years ago. I picked up the shingles, used some patching cement and nailed them back down. Called my insurance company just to let them know in case anything came up later. They sent an adjuster out and informed me I had hail damage I never knew about. They paid for a new roof.

As a former roofer, I can guarantee that serious rain will get through a blue tarp. It always finds a way, especially if you get wind with it. Rolled roofing can last 5 or more years if you get it down right.

I just did this for my BIL recovering from cancer surgery. I used 3 tab again. Start at the bottom and get them slid up under the last top row and nail under the tabs. It's probably just as fast as roll and will seal better.

I am not a professional roofer by any means, but I did lose a bunch of three tabs a couple years ago in a wind storm. I was able to patch the hole with new three tabs slid up and under the old shingles.

It was not pretty, but it lasted from before Christmas through spring time when I put a new steel roof on over the asphalt/fiberglass shingles

Yup the ol' wonder bar is the key to slipping under a shingle and popping those hidden nails loose.

Just replace the shingles. You'll need a five or six inch drywall taping knife to slide under the tabs to break the "wind seals". Then you'll need a carpenter's cat's paw/nail puller that has a nail puller on the angled and the straight end of the tool. The latter is what you'll need to slide under the shingles and remove the nails. The nails should be a couple of inches above the top of each rain slot. You may have nails five or so inches above that that just catch the top edge of the shingle you are trying to remove, those will need to be pulled as well to get the shingle out intact.

For only six weeks or so you could just slide some sections of 30# felt under the shingles to cover the missing ones. Nail the bottom edges of the felt with washer head/felt cap nails and place some asphalt cement over them so water won't get into the nail holes.

Wel, the problem is NOT "a few" shingles. I lost about half the shingles on the north side. It's about double what I saw at the time of the first post.

It's not a 'lost a few shingles' repair. I'm looking to prevent damage until I can reroof.

I had planned to re-shingle this year, so now I'm just looking to patch to last until decent weather in maybe April or May.

As it turns out now, it will take 2-3 large tarps to cover the entire north side. Or, slap down some roll roofing for 2 - 4 months.

Again, any roofers here with a reco?
