Hello Savagelanders, I ran across a small cardboard box at a gunshow today. Across the top said Savage in big letters, the rest of the lettering told about the .227 bullets inside. This was a partial box of bullets and he wanted $54 for it.The box was in excellent condition except he wrote the price on the bottom.I wanted to ask the experts if this was a deal or not,he also had some remington kleanbore 303 brass for 20 a box in the old green and red box.All opinions are appreciated thanks!

$54 is way too much for the bullets.
The brass might be worth $20 a box if it is in good enough condition to reload & if you need it bad enough.

Were the .227 bullets made by Sisk?

All the box said was Savage, but I really did not look too close.

Are .227 bullets made by Sisk any more valuable than other .277 bullets of that era?

I wouldn't pay that for them. The big "SAVAGE" on the box just sounded like Sisk. If it was a true Savage Arms box then I might get excited.

I agree with Rick. Sure sound like Sisk bullets to me. If the box were full, and sealed, $54 isn't way out of line. A broken partial box- nah. Sisks were the premo bullets in their day, and enjoy a limited collector's following today. Had it been me, I would have done my best to dicker with the guy so as to take those bullets home with me. Heck, if I were in the right mood and had a pile of money to burn (or drunk) I might have bought them regardless- I hold them in that high esteem.
I grab Sisk bullets in any diameter and weight for use in vintage varmint rifles whenever I find them reasonably priced. The last 70gr. .228's I had shot better than anything I ever tried in the HP, and I've tried a lot. Sisk made .228's in a decent range of weights, from 55gr. up to 70gr. They also made .224 bullets designed by both Lovell and Niedner for use in their proprietary .22 wildcats. The 50gr. Lovell style shoot beautifully in my .22 Maximum Lovell Krag built by Hervey Lovell. The last couple boxes of them I spied were in the $50 price range too.

Went back today, they are Sisk but only a half box if that. The guy said they were rare so he would not take less.He still has them.

I have some of the .227's in 55, 63 and 70 gr. but it has been sometime since I have seen any for sale.
