You couldn't be more wrong. You obviously don't understand how that reticle works in low light. The thin portion disappears and you bracket the animal with the fat portion. Try one at night on some hogs then you'll understand how it works. It's not for 500 yd target shooting, it's for <150 yd night hunting & it works wonderfully for the purpose it's designed

ive got a 3-12x56 meopta with the 4C sfp reticle. i agree with crow hunter it just works even tho the middle portion is a touch thin. if u want a thicker mid portion check out the meopta plex reticle in the 3-12x56 first focal plane.

I understand how it works. I just don't prefer it since I don't hunt at night. Dusk yes, night no.

I have about ruled out the Leopold #4, though I wouldn't mind trying on in another brand sometime. I hadn't thought about the post and duplex. I'll probability either go with that or a heavy duplex.

Personally I like the PD better than the HD, but not all that big of a deal.

You're also used to shoot over the irons?

No one has mentioned german #1, which gives the same view as good irons, and with which you catch the target with the vertical post. Good for shooting at dusk, and also good for precise shots on small targets.

Recently I bought a Leupold with Heavy Duplex, which I must say that I don't like. The center of the cross is to fat and covers to much.

[quote=Crow hunter} I know illuminated reticles are the fad now but I don't care for them. I don't want to have to worry about turning it on before I shoot. [/quote]

One great feature on the VX-R scopes is even tho the ill' reticle is turned ON , It automatically turns itself OFF when the rifle is immobile for a period of time, But also automatically turns ON again when the rifle is moved ever so slightly !

The Firedot #4 is a great scope as recomended above , as well as the Ballistic Fire Dot Reticle which I have decided to buy.

All my Big Game Rifles for the past 50 years have had large (4" & 3") Dots in them , The BEST reticle of all in a non illuminated scope. In "failing" light the illuminated is the way to go .
BTW Duplex reticles give me fits,I have never been one to accept something forced on me . When that Duplex first came out ,That was all you could find. I Hate them more than you hate Illuminated ! laugh laugh

Anyone one got a pic of the leupold #4. Would like to see what it actually looks like not what leupold shows. I am going with a Vx 3 1.5x5 for my 350 and cannot decide which reticle. Leaning towards the #4 or post and duplex.

I must not hunt very late....I have killed everything with a standard Duplex.

Even in European scopes, the best and most useable low light reticle I have ever seen was the Swaro version of a Duplex in their old PH series of scopes...the thing just would not quit.

I also like the ZPlex in the new 2-10 HD5 Zeiss Conquest.

I have no problem with a duplex. But lowlight my eyes are for crap. Last half hour forty minutes of light I have a hard time with a duplex it all seems to run together. Greater contrast between the outer edges and center of the reticle make it much easier for me to focus. I have a burris with a #4 lighted reticle. It is perfect even without the reticle turned on. Burris no longer offers a scope with the reticle in a lower power range. Also after customer service from hell mulitiple times I will never buy another burris. Hoping the leupold is similar but cannot find one to look at locally.

I use Leupold VXIIIs & an older LPS. I had all the reticles changed to heavy duplex. They work great in low light!!
