That's pretty wild. The Toyota pickup with a 22R and carburetor was making 25mpg through the early 80's and a bit better when the injected 22RE came out in the pickup.

Thirty years of technology has not allowed Toyota any improvement?????? Or is it that the typical Toy now comes with a big v-6, four doors and weighs in at 5300 lbs?

The MPG figures are for 4.0 v6. A four cylinder is nearly useless when using a tacoma to its rated towing numbers.

I had to look up the urea stuff. Between that and the exhaust filters, diesels look less useful for ordinary everyday driving. The new diesels have only compression ignition in common with the old ones. Of course, gasoline engines are way more complicated too. Maybe Stanley had it right, or Baker.

My 98 F150 4.6 looks pretty good right now, clutch 5 speed, 6 passengers, 18 mpg mostly, and the payments are really good.

Towing and carrying a camper is why we keep a real truck on the side of the driveway. Toyotas are for commuting and four wheeling in the hills.

Winner winner chicken dinner... Although are the mid size PUs really over 5000 lbs? My 2000 Frontier is only in the 4400 lb. range.



It has been a while, but I think my 92 4-runner is over 5000 lb. And it gets 15 mpg. My 96 GMC with 5.7 MPI does better.

Far more pickups are sold to suburbanites for trips to Home Depot, and to commuting construction tradesmen for tools and supplies, than will ever be sold to ranchers and outdoorsmen.....

Always kinda thought that a VW TDI with some work would be awesome in an all fiberglass Wrangler. Torque for crawlin'....

I'd love a diesel p/u but realistically, I just can't justify it. 1/2 ton or not. I just don't use a truck that way. For me the perfect truck is a Tacoma though I'm thinking hard about an F-150. 5.4 in my father's - I used to get between 17.5 and 20.9 with a mix of city/highway so I can live with that for the most part. Uncle has one with the Ecoboost and his real world average is about 22mpg, dropped to 12 while pulling 10k tho.
