I got the 5 and 1/2" model first, and fell in love with it immediately. So much so, that I decided to get another Model 41...I just didn't want one exactly like the one I had. So I got the 7" model, and it's a true pleasure to shoot also. They both weigh near about the same. I like a little weight out front on a handgun, and the heavy 5 and 1/2" barrel seems a little heavier in the muzzle to me compared to the 7" gun. I think it balances perfectly, and they both are incredible shooters...in every way. You won't go wrong with either one of em. You're treating yourself to the best by getting a Model 41...!
Every day on this side of the ground is a win.

If costs are considered (and they must be for most commopn shooters) there is no pistol available that will match the Ruger heavy barrel models. The 5 1/2" heavy barrel Ruger will shoot with any but a true target pistol for accuracy and do so in a package that carries well and points straight.
True, the High Standard pistols are bit more accurate (in some cases), but are not available in today's market.....and bring a premium price when found.
If price is not a question (and when is that ever true) the Model 41 is certainly the "holy grail" of target/field pistols. The 7" models are surely accurate enough, but just a bit too much for daily carry. The 5" models are great for carry and accurate enough for anything short of true bullseye competition.....but damn what you have to pay to own one.
Over-all, with price and accuracy considered....the heavy Ruger has to be the choice.

Clark custom does both, the Ruger and the 41. Buy either and never look back. My vote is for the 41 though!

I like the S&W 41 but I don't own one. My 22 pistol is a Ruger MKII Goventment Model with the 6-7/8" bull barrel. It is very accurate and it should last forever.

The guy you need to talk to is Paladin here on the fire. What he does with his 41 is astonishing.

I will say that the one thing that disappoints me about the new Model 41's is how the lettering looks like it's put on with a dot matrix printer.
Why does S&W cheap out on this???

My slabside Gov't MKII will put a magazine of CCI HPs or WW PPs into a quarter, at 50 yds.....Rugers shoot - this model I seem to recall had tighter chambers i.e. less throat. Either way, I have shot groups with my Rugers that matched my 41, a good trigger and sights will help the Ruger. I don't shoot competition, plinking and hunting grade ammo, so that is what I base my accuracy results on.
The 41 is nice, but at a price.

The SW41 is very nice. I have a High Standard Supermatic Citation - Very nice pistol also. Might try looking at a High Standard.

Don't be afraid to get a nice used one, they are out there. When I was on the hunt for a Smith 17 revolver, I looked at a new manufacture one vs. various used models. Ended up getting a 98% K-22 of late 1950's manufacture, for almost the exact same price as a new one, and it is a damm sight better in manufacture and quality.

I'd say a 41 also but I'd go with an early model, perhaps a compensated one in great shape. I think it will appreciate more and the quality is there. Something like this: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=391858061 270

Just placed an order with Kittery Tradding Post for a new Model 41.Just not sure when they will receive it. Went with the 5" barrel. The 7" looked a little long. Good choice? I hope he will enjoy it as a gift. Thanks to all of you in helping make this choice..

While the Model 41 is really a nice pistol especially the HB 5" you have missed the finest 22 auto made - the Colt Woodsman Match Target 4". Hands down above the 41 to me. I would take a Supermatic over a S&W 41. Of course the Colt and the HiStandard are no longer produced but are available.

I've never been exposed to a M 41, so have no comment.
I have a Ruger Mk II SS 6 7/8 tapered Target model and HAD 2 others. I traded my first, blued, for my current. I bought a second for my son.
ALL 3 have been terrific shooters and accurate beyond my expectations. I've never had ANY trouble with the MK IIs.
Not dissing the M 41, don't see how they can be any more accurate.

I've owned the 41 when I shot competition. I gave $350 for mine and sold it the next year for the same when I stopped shooting matches. What a bonehead. I had the 5.5 bull barrel as well. Mine never hiccupped with any ammo but really shined with the better Eley.
