I'm looking at the Leupold VX-1 4-12x 40mm scope for a Tikka T3 in .25-06. I'm trying to keep the overall weight of the rifle down, and want a higher end magnification for longer shots. My main quarry will be prarie Whitetails and Muledeer in S Alberta and Saskatchewan. The max range would be 400 yards. Like to get opinions on the clarity of the optics of the scope as compared to the Rifleman and VX-2 models. Would I be any better served by a 3-9 power? Any opinions would be appreciated.

dragoon,
I think the VX-1 will serve you well. I have a VX-II and the VX-1 when they upgraded a few years ago, is pretty much what the VX-II was. I am actually taking he youngest to school in a couple of minutes and then heading out to pick up the exact scope you are asking about. Mine is going in a .300WSM Rem. 700 I bought two weekends ago. I wanted a VX-3 3.5-10, but the bank does not offer wiggle room right now.

Since Leupold upgraded in 2012 the VX-1 is a very good scope. I have a 1-4X20 on an AR and I'm impressed. I'd use the VX-1, but last time I priced them the VX-2 was only about $50 more for comparable models.
The 4-12X40 VX-1 would be a good scope, but a 4-12X40 VX-1 is exactly the same price as a 3-9X40 VX-2. I'd buy the 3-9X40 VX-2 for the same money.
Most people don't really want the truth.
They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

I had one briefly, and it was a pos. Something very screwed up with the eyebox. You had a very small window to get it perfectly aligned. My cousin had the same issue with the same scope (not mine). I'd advise looking thru one first, if you just gotta have one. I'd look into the VX-2 with the LR recticle.

I'd spend the extra and get the 2 or get the 3-9 vx2 for the same money. I'm very impressed with the glass in the vx2.

dragoon,
I went to buy the VX-1 4-12 today, and ended up buying a 3-9x40 VX-2 somewhere else for $20 less.

Unless you're hunting early/late in the day under thick forest cover on a cloudy day the VX2 won't make any discernible difference. The VX3 will though..
You had it right the first time.

I had one and got rid of it. I paid $100 for it because the first guy didn't like the eye relief, but I figured the price was right so I would try it. Well, he was right, the eye relief sucked!

Never experienced an imaginary problem with eye relief or eye box with the VX1 4x12.

The VX1 4-12 is messed up in the eyebox for my preferences, and I tried two of them. They are not as easy to use as the 3-9 Leupies, so I'd get a VX2 3-9x40 and be done with it.
