Hi. The LGS has what I believe to be a 99R in .300 Savage. They have finally come down enough in price that I am interested. SN is in the low 900,000 range, has a brass rotor, and is factory D&T'd. It is missing the rear sight, not a biggie as I have a spare, and the butt stock appears to a replacement. Bore is excellent and mechanically the rifle is in great shape. Question is, there is an "X" marked on the side of the front ring where the Savage 99 resides. Is there any significance to the "X"? Obviously this isn't a collect but seems like a solid sound shooter grade rifle at a reasonable price. Just curious as to the "X". Found a pic on the net that is pretty much what the rifle in question looks like: Thanks.

It's just an inspector's stamp. Each inspector had a stamp with a different shape.
Odd that you found a 99R in 300 in the low 900,000's - most of those lower numbers are 243/308/358 and they either kept making or using up the older receivers in the 700,000 range for 250's and 300's. Sounds like a good shooter, but hope the price is low with a replaced buttstock. 99R's in 300 Savage are a fairly cheap gun to buy.

Calhoun, Thanks for the info. So, just an inspector's mark and not a rejct mark, good.
I noticed in the pic I posted that the Model designation followed the 99 stamp. I will revisit the rifle in question to see if the model is also stamped after the 99. Only my "F" model has this stamping, perhaps I overlooked it on the rifle I am interested in.
From what little I know about 99's it seems like an R. It has the rounded fore arm I see R's with, 24" barrel, shotgun butt plate.
What do yo consider a fair price for the rifle I described? And/or, what do original 99R's in 300 go for?

R's won't have any model designation on it. But with what you list, it will be an R. Here's one to compare it to: Price wise... low. Online, nice shooters can be had for $450 or so plus shipping/FFL feels.
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

Looks like it, thanks for the pic. Butt stock is still walnut, correct shape but from a newer model (year). The price I negotiated is a good bit less than $450.
Sounds like I may have to bite.

Is it an R stock or different?
With "a good bit less" going for you I'd snap it right up!!
