Steelhead - who has built your Howa's? Wondering if there are any gunsmiths known for working with the Howa action. Check out custom stocks and steel. He likes to work on howas

I'm reminded of an article by one of the gun writers, can't remember which website, could very well be this one. It was an in-depth article as to why the Howa 1500 was the ideal action for a custom build. Howas don't get critized much.

I have three Howas and they have all been dropped into McMillans and re-tubed with #2's or #3's. The exception being one .223 that still wears the factory tube, but that will be sent out soon. They balance great and will stay sub-8lbs easily.
Knowing what I know now I will buy a Howa before a 700 for any build. I love 'em.
Travis This. I have two with the original factory tubes. I used the McMillan stock for the Sako and a Timney. Their stock triggers are hit and miss.
A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

Mine all wear Timneys as well. That Ranchland Compact may not, I'm not sure. But all the new Howa's I have finger banged had good triggers. Travis

I have a Howaguard in 300WM I need to put in a decent stock. I like them quite a bit.
Anyone ever ADL one? Is it possible?

I have had three; still have two and wished I didn't sell the third, which was a super accurate .257 sub-MOA. Great actions, super accurate and not as heavy as some think with custom barrel/stock.
My last one I bought was a .308 youth model Vanguard that was on close out out Cabelas when the S2s came out. Paid $299 and with Cabelas points, walked out with pretty much a free rifle. I bought a Bansner stock off the classifieds that had a poor bedding / fitting job for $100 or so. Mounted a cheap scope I had laying around in cheap Weaver mounts and proceeded to shoot clover leafs with 3 separate loads. Rifle and scope were around 7 pounds.
So, what did I do? Re-barreled with a Shilen no. 4 cut to 18.5" so I could mount a suppressor. Just picked up this morning and it looks great and weighs 6.5 pounds with Bansner stock. Still have the accurate factory barrel with 20 rounds through it also.
Some gunsmiths won't cut metric threads, but other than that I like them better than model 700s.

I bought one last year with the plan of making it into a 358 Winchester. Chambered in 243 I made the classic mistake of shooting it (had some old reloads) and it is almost a 1/2 inch rifle. Bet it will shoot even better with brass fired in it's own chamber which is somewhat oversize. Trigger was like dragging a tire rim over a gravel road till I blew all the trash and dust out of it before a cleaning and oiling, now it is good enough. It is the S&W version built with a detachable magazine back in 1982. The stock resembles the model 70's featherweight design.
