"Much deeper Lake Ontario is only about 41 percent of ice covered. . ." Umm... Lake Superior (1332') along with Lake Michigan (923') are deeper than Lake Ontario (802'). While having the lakes freeze completely is a good thing for evaporation it's not so good for the steelhead and coho salmon population.

The extensive ice cover results in less evaporation of lake water. Coupled with a high spring run-off from this winter's accumulation of snow, we can expect a healthy rise in Great Lakes water levels this year.
So there is a silver lining to this cold spell.

Now I'm confused.... Why are higher water levels on the Great Lakes good and higher water levels by the sea bad?  Can these global warming freaks ever make up their minds?
