What is the largest caliber that a 1917 Enfield 30-06 is able to be converted to?

I've seen one on a 600 Overkill.

Not an Enfield or rifle, but there are plenty of Mausers with a similar design out there as 16 guage shotguns which is about a 0.663 caliber.

I would suggest to the original poster that he purchase a copy of Art Alphin's book: Any Shot you Want... He will likely find more big-bore cartridges in that book than anywhere else. And likely more than any sane person that I know would want to shoot... i.e: the .577 Tyrannosaur which shoots a load of 140 grs. of IMR-4350 behind a 750 gr. bullet of .585 diameter to just over 2400 f.p.s...

Throughout most of the world, shotgun shells are called cartridges. smile

Rifle cartridge is the choice but if it were shotgun then why stop at 16gage instead of 10gage?

Scratch your head a bit and think about this rifles are denoted in caliber and shotguns are denoted by gage. Maybe you are sitting on your head and can't scratch it.

The Enfield is probably one of the strongest actions in the Military catagory. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for most shoulder fired ammunition.

1917 Enfield actions have enough room for cartridges like 300 H&H
and 8mm Remington magnum, maybe any Remington RUM cartridge.

I am leaning toward the 6.5 Prometheus which has the 300 Norma Magnum as a parent case. It will achieve 3700fps with a 140gr bullet.

By the time you have the metalwork done to get reliable feeding, a new mag box, cock on closing, new trigger, d/t for scope base, you might as well start with a stiller 408 or other custom action.

To me the only reason to use a big clunky enfield is to house something truly massive that won't fit in a less action, such as a 505 Gibbs, 585 Nyati or 600 Overkill.

Be careful with the 12 ga ones. They blow up. Google it.

Gun Shows are almost as comical as boat ramps in the Spring.
