So, I'm building a semi-custom LH .375 h&h for a 2015 Kodiak bear hunt. It's a LH Win Model 70. I'm tossing the stock and putting a McMillan. The questions are:

1. Do I cut it from 24" to 22"? Why/why not?
2. Do I Cerakote or Duracoat? Why/why not?

Thanks in advance for the input.

I'll let the more experienced guys chime in here, but based on previous threads a Mcmillan Echols legend stock, cerakote, and a 23" barrel seem to be a popular combo on m70's.

1. 22" You don't need to pole vault with it. I'd even consider 21".

2. Cerakoat. More durable and much "thinner" so as not to affect any tolerances.

If it is the express model I would give serious thought to a new slimmer stainles barrel or possibly turning down the factory barrel.

Especially if you put a lighter stock on it it will be decidedly muzzle heavy with the factory .458 contour.

I would go for an all up weight of around 9 lbs. that's scope, sling and full magazine. Some would go lighter but I wouldn't.

A 20" barrels seems all the rage and if it was for what I call a "fishing rifle" ( mostly stays slung while you fish ) I might go that short. For a hunting rifle 21-23" would be good. With the odd ball 23" my favorite. But my current .375 will stay at 24".

I would also look into the various nitride finishes and Melonite, these are even more durable than Cerakote.

I would definitely go with Cerakote, I have several rifles done in different Cerakote colors. It is MUCH better than Duracoat. The rifle I took to Africa was done in Stainless Cerakote and I crawled across the ground with it and there is not 1 mark on the finish, Cerakote is really tough!

I would also go with a 22" barrel

why bother him if you aren't going to have him do the work?

It rains and sleets and snows a lot of places besides Alaska and people do fine without all of that fancy stuff.

I' bring a very small jar of either paste wax or vasline and a small screwdriver and call it good.
