I really want a new Remington mountain rifle with the B&C stock but I am hesitant to put one on layaway due to the horror stories of the bolt handles breaking off.

Am I being unreasonable or should i not be concerned?

Anyone else hesitant to purchase a Model 700?

I've owned several Model 700s for many years. I wouldn't wory about the rare occurance of a bad bolt handle braze. The Remington Model 700 is a well proven, reliable, and accurate rifle.

I'm turned off to them and the Remington 700 was my favorite rifle. Between the bolt handles, extractor breakage, accidental discharges, and now triggers breaking I've gone to Ruger. More reliable.

If you reload rounds that are too hot and then try to beat the bolt open with a rock then you should be concerned. If you want the most accurate production rifle you can buy then get a Remington.

Not a Remmy guy but I wouldn't let the silver brazed handle stop me. I'd send it out and have it tig welded for $65.

Tig welded bolt handles

Or contact Chad Dixon at Longrifles, Inc. Have not used either, but they both seem to have great reputations.

Soapy,
Info I've heard from the net is Sako barrels explode,A-bolt bolt sleeves wear out,
Kimbers can't shoot straight, weatherbys rusting in the box and so on. I own a mountain SS in 280, and I love it. If you like it, buy it. I trust mine with my life a month a year. Take more chances with my wife's meatloaf.

Did you use a large rock or a small rock to open the bolt?

It happens, but VERY rarely as near as I can tell. As mentioned, there are ways to deal with it should the unthinkable happen.

I say go for it. I have an "original" mountain rifle chambered in .280 circa 1991, and it is just flat awesome.

The bolt handle coming off would be the least of my worries. I started with a 700, and have used them more than any other brand, but no more for me. Having one drop the firing pin in your hands without pulling the trigger, and then reading the overwhelming evidence where the same has happened to thousands of others was the end of the line for me.
