any difference in quality between $40.00 Talley's and Leupold's $14.00 Rifleman rings.

Talley's Vertical split are heavier, machined blued steel.
The Leupold Rifleman are a light weight alloy, but I emailed Leupold about their strength, and they replied that they were designed and tested to be as strong as their older styles.

Your's shoots better, with the superior chamber.............................

Thanx,

I'm a PRW fan.

I really like their clamping surface area, symmetry and lack of projections........................

I concur, though wish that Leupold made a version in aluminum. Their weight is their only drawback I can see.

Mag confines are sub-2.500". That's why Layne went 7SGLC.

An 8" twist 6BR would be sweet though.............................

I am using my first and only set of PRW's on my LVSF rifle ... Not concerned about weight issues ... I really like the rings ... I'll use them again, in the future ...

The LW's are simple, strong, extremely lightweight, well made, and in my opinion priced well. The last 4 rifles I have put together wear them and for now don't see that changing.

fwiw,
I personally like the Talley TNTs for use with relatively lightweight scopes on sporting rifles. Their tolerances are superb and customer service is excellent. I actually FAR prefer the screw locks on anything that doesn't have a back up scope. Read .375 H&H and up... I use their TNTs on My Cooper 57M .22 LR to my Model 70 in .375 H&H Magnum and most everything in between that doesn't use Badger Ordnance or Larue Tactical...

I also field Leupold Dual Dovetails and PRWs without a hitch either... Still think the Dual Dovetail is the most ring and base for the money on the market. It was my first set on my first rifle and I'm not sure they've ever been trumped...imho & fwiw

Regards, Matt.

I have a 1" scope ring reamer I got from Brownells years ago. I have reamed several pairs of Warne rings ( they needed it, the halves didn't match up perfectly) with the same general approach as hoizontals. Coated the inside with blacking and reamed until I had 75-90% contact.

Probably just being a codger, but I seem to think the rings I got when Dave was making them were just a little higher quality than the new ones from SC. These days I am mostly buying Burris Signature Rings.

I've never seen the LW units I hear for what they charge they are a good deal.

I don't like vertical split rings.

I agree with an above poster that Leupolds DD system is the best for the money.

Could it be that Talley's also enjoy a "trendy" factor?

Talley enjoys the 2 ounce homogenous factor, that happens to be concentric.....................

I have the Talley LWs on three rifles now. They replaced older, clunky Leupold one-piece mounts.

Fewer moving parts, and I kind of like the extra space over the bolt for occasional scope-handle carrying.

Any scope that comes off one of my other rifles will likely be remounted in new Lightweights.

Should add,it would suprise me,if there's many folks who've driven more DD's than me.

The LW's are far more concentric, though Posilign DD's nip that nicely, but their weight is doubled at 4oz.

Steel is my favorite, but homogenous alloy isn't a big concession, especially with twice as many cap fasteners and more clamping surface area.

Your mileage may vary.........................

I like teh combination of rugged steel bases and rings combined with their minimalist design.

Second their customer service has been outstanding.

They are my standard base & rings now.

I can't agree with you Jim on this one. I have the Talley steel rings and bases only because the Kimbers still have few choices.

The split ring at the top can collect moisture and gunk. This is not a good looking or well designed ring. They are also cheap looking and nothing like the beautiful and complete shims that Beuhler used for their split top rings.

The Tally detachable system has a few tiny springs in there and is quite complicated. The finish on Talleys matches nothing but maybe a Savage 110.

On the postitive side Talley's service is prompt and polite.

I have not used their new one piece but I might.
