I see they twisted it 1-8, anyone know what max OAL cartridge might fit in the rotary magazine?

I can get 75 grain swifts at 2.24 to work fine in an AR mag and the ogive is not below the case mouth. The Barnes 70 TSX can be 2.25 so wondering if this gun has at least same magazine length as an AR magazine?

With an 18 inch barrel the 70 grain TSX should do OK on things I might want to shoot.

I am going to get the standard compact in 223. Initially I intended on using 60gr Nosler partitions but I am now considering the 75gr Swift scirocco.

I am curious on if the 75gr Swift scirocco will chamber and their performance on deer. It may give me some extended range over the nosler for deer.

I'm loading 55gr Nosler BT's at 2.260" in my Ruger American and they're working fine.

I'm loading the 75gr Swifts at 2.325 in my 223AI. Not digging the short magazine on the Ruger.

Aside from the fast twist, there's not much about the RAR 223 that lends itself to AI'ing or heavy bullet shooting.

Which proves yet again that makers don't understand that everything in a rifle should work in tandem.

Forbes gives you a long magazine and then throws a 1-10" twist on the 243.

I'm always shaking my head.

Melvin will make it a FULA for $650. You want one?

Who works for these guys? Certainly no one who understands rifles and bullets. I cannot fathom a fast twist with a shorter box than an AR mag. Oh well back to saving for a 1-9 kimber Montana.

Send Ruger an email suggesting they redesign the mag box on the 223. Explain your desires to utilize bullets to take advantage of their twist. Give them thanks for producing a fast twist 223 bolt gun.

Several have sent an email already and I've seen some comments on Facebook. Ruger does listen. A Ruger rep once told me that every email that is sent to "Tell the CEO" on their web page is forwarded to R&D and each rep immediately for feedback. I fully expect them to address the mag box in the future.

It benefits them to give the consumer what they want.

waste of time in my opinion. If your so bumbfuddled that you cannot put even a AR length box in a 223 gun with a fast twist you probably don't even know what you dont know.

I screwed up the copy thing. I'll try to fix it....

Perfect. Especially after a mag mod for to 75 A-Max and other LONG bullets...

COAL:

75 A-Max 2.420"
62 TSX 2.280"
65 SGK 2.240"
55 NBT 2.274"
64 BSB 2.135" (always way short in every 223 I've checked)
55 HSP w/c 2.169"
50 NBT 2.280"
40 VMax 2.235"
40 V'Geddon 2.555"

They're throated right. Lots of bullets will work well. I don't have any of the 68's or 69's on hand to measure. Maybe somebody can do a comparison with another bullet.

The 40gr Varmageddon was a typo. It should be 2.255".

Aint so much about hitting lands, if the chamber is cut right you don't have to be right at or in lands anyway.

But make the rounds seat the bullets so deep in the case, to make OAL and you burn room for powder....

Of course it doesn't surprise me with manufacturers, they build for factory loads... not for reloaders.... most folks don't reload anyway.

And being its Ruger, well thats enough reason to lookfor another source.

I don't shoot with anything touching or jammed. I do appreciate the luxury of being able to designate jump while remaining within mag confines.

The only bullet on the list that doesn't work is the 75. Granted, I wish it did and Ruger may correct the issue in the future.

I much prefer being able to get as close as possible and working from there. That can't be said for many manufacturers' chambers.

Seems 2.292 is longer than AR magazines that I am aware of. Any more insight?

yes I made a mistake, I tried and you can get 2.26 into a P-Mag but that is it. Think my Swift load and 62 TSX will work in the ruger.

How does one modify the magazine?

You have to also consider that the guys that want a longer magazine and heavy pills from their 223Rem ... will often go and build exactly what they want rather than buy a budget factory gun.
Cheers...

75 A max would be below the ogive.

from Ruger:

All of our firearms are designed to handle all US Industry Standard Ammunition made to SAAMI Spec. If you have specific questions as to whether a type of ammunition meets SAAMI specs. We recommend you contact an ammo manufacturer such as Federal at 800-322-2342. Thank you for your email.
