Great Waputi, nylon 11(bolt action clip feed) nylon 77 (semi auto clip feed) use the same mag as the 581 or I should say the 581 uses the same mag as the 2 nylons because they pre date the 581/541 by many years. A Winchester 77 has a steel mag that works only in Winchester Model 77's period. Magnum Man

Bought a 580 for $200 on a whim 2 years ago. Someone had gone to great lengths on this rifle. Beautiful piece of wood, shortened and re crowned the barrel and hung a decent 2x scope on it. Almost looked as if it was custom made into a youth rifle or as a present for a younger or small statured person.
and does it shoot ? 1 ragged hole at 50....

79inpa: My local pawn/sport shop here in Dillon, Montana has a very nice Remington Model 581 in 22 L.R. for sale. The Rifle is in the store on consignment and is "asking" priced at $200.00 with one magazine and a scope mounted on it. When the scope was mounted the rear sight was removed and is not with the Rifle now - I am not sure if the owner/consignee has that sight or not. Other than that the Rifle is all original and unmodified. The Rifle is in very good condition - I would rate the bluing at 97% and the wood at 95%+! The barrel has been inspected by me and has no bulges and is VERY bright inside. I am trying to remember the brand and power of scope but I can't - I do recall that I was not particularly impressed with the scope and its value. If you are interested the phone number for the shop is 406-683-9844 - they are open Tuesday through Saturday 9:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. (M.S.T.). Please contact me if you have any questions and I will re-visit the shop and try to ascertain what ever you may be interested in. I am/was personally interested in the Rifle as a possible gift for one of my grandsons - what is holding me back is that this Rifle is definitely adult sized and the stock would need to be adjusted for said VarmintGrandKid. I have no experiences with the Remington 582. Best of luck in your search. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy I have 3 complete rear sights assy for the 581, if your looking for a sight

Gemby58: Thanks for the interest - I will contact the owner of the store and see if the consignee would like to add one of your sights to his Rifle? Thanks again. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy P.S.: On Tuesday morning should I mention a price for one of your sights - I am sure they will ask?

I have heard that some outfit is making a replacement mag for 581's out of steel. There was talk of it on several Rimfire forums, but I don't think it ever panned out. Mags for a Winchester 77 will also work in 581's. Knew I had seen these then couldn't recall where. Just rn across them at SARCO here's the link. Bottom center of page MAGAZINES FOR REMINGTON .22 RIFLES New, blued steel replacement magazine for the 513T series of Rem. .22 rifles and all Rem series 500 rifles SARCO

Even though the ad says "all Rem series 500 rifles" it is wrong. The magazine they are selling is for the early 500 series rifles which takes a completely different magazine from the 581.

No one makes a 5 round magazine for a Remington 581, not even Remington anymore only 10 rounders, the one Brownells sell won't fit the 581

Wasn't aware there was a difference between the older 541/581 magazines and newer 581's .... or am I misinterpreting something. What would the differences be?

To the best of my knowledge and experience the 541, 581, and Rem Nylon 77 all use the same magazines. That would be the plastic one in either 5 or 10 shot but they do not use the same magazine as the earlier 500 series rifles made by Remington. exampe - Remington 511 / 513 http://www.brownells.com/magazines/rifle-magazines/magazines/22-rimfire-clip-magazine-prod7944.aspxexample - Remington 541 / 581 http://www.brownells.com/search/index.htm?k=remington+581+magazine&avs%7CMake~~Model_1=Remington__581 drover

So this one on the Brownells site should work in the 581? Brownells Yes that one will work, but there junk, plain and simple. You could get lucky and get a good one, but you would stand a better chance of winning the power ball lottery then getting a good one. I still have 12 5 rounders yet to go with the 581 rifles I have.

Yep. As I mentioned above, I've had experience with both 5's and 10's, and never was able to make a 10rd run. I was just curious about the confusion earlier.

I finally got the gun back from my gunsmith. He says that the trigger is non adjustable so he just cleaned it and put it back together. Also the movement on the barrel that I thought was from improper bedding is actually just the magazine tube moving around.
At the range I fired some cardboard box Winchester powerpoints, Remington thunderbolts, and cci mini mags at the 50 yard line. Groups from the thunderbolts averaged around an inch while the other two types of ammo ran about the same with groups a bit under the half inch mark.

When I bought my 581L in the early 1980s, my gunsmith did a trigger job and reduced the pull from over 6 pounds to about 2.5 pounds and it is as crisp as breaking glass.

Green tag has shot great in ours. We also had a sub sonic round, thinking it was Eley, that was right around .250 - .3 at 50 yards for 5 shots. They shoot a lot of stuff well, just those two really well so far though.

The trigger may be non-adjustable in the traditional sense that you can't turn a screw to bring it down, but a lighter spring does wonders. Those PMC Zappers were great, wish they were still available. I remember when a local dealer was closing them out for $12/brick. Wish I would have bought them all...(to shoot, not to sell on Gunbroker!).
