Handled the compact ruger american this morning.. The .223 is a nifty little thing, but the .243 has me thinking it would be nice for the boy or to swing out the truck winder..
18" barrel too obnoxious?
I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

Not if you wear earplugs and make sure that the muzzle is outside the cab.

I have an 18.5 inch Model 7 in 260. It's definitely got a bark to it but it's a very handy little rifle. I recommend ear plugs at all times.
Those who must raise their voice to get their point across are generally not intelligent enough to do so in any other way.

I had a Remington 600 Mohawk in .243. It was loud, but most centerfires are.

Yep.
Buy the full size 243, trade your stock for compact with Ruger and cut it to no less than 20".
I enjoy handguns and I really like shotguns,...but I love rifles!

Dude, just buy a 243 Montana.
What are they, 22"?
Not bad out of the cab for me but it really bothers the dogs so I don't do it anymore.
The dogs inside of the cab that is.

I have a Rem 788 in 243 with the 18 1/2" tube and it's just not that bad, sure it's report is a little more noticable but not as bad as some make it out to be, it would make a very good truck gun, or a starter rifle for a young son or daughter.....+ they are very accurate and fairly reasonable!

The dogs inside of the cab that is. $350 for the ruger has the wheels turning.. I love making cheep chit work. To make matters worse, the howa prices have been cut to the bone at sportsman's whorehouse.. That montana has my year end bone-us already tied up..

And that 223 is only burning roughly half the powder too.

Shooting a Win 70 featherweight .270 now that's a lot more civilized than the racket-makin', flame-throwin' Rem 600 .243 I shot most my life.

Rancho After having a short barreled 243, I woulddn't want another- Mine was a Remington 600 and I think the barrel was 18 inches or so. I would think it would be a good way to get a kid flinching, from what I have heard noise is as bad a flinch maker as recoil is- Just my thoughts-

Should get my montana .243 back from getting the barrel cut down to 18". So i will see just how obnoxious she is. On the good note, it got threaded also, as to run a titanium suppressor on it. Should be a nice light, little rig!
