I have an old 512 which is getting pretty tired but it still works. I get sick of magazine troubles with detachable versions. Tube mags are not cool these days but a 582 would be my choice.

For me, the 581s don't carry as well, since the magazine protrudes so far below the bottom of the stock, as the 582s. I have multiples of the 580, 581, and 582 and like them, but would like them a little more if the stocks fit me better. They seem about 7/8th size for me, OK, but not quite right.

always liked the various 500 series guns...grew up with a 514.
some years ago i sold my 581, and regretted it.
last gun show i stumbled into a 582 someone had made into a project gun. Previous owner added a contrasting forend tip & grip cap, refinished the whole gun, jeweled the bolt, and added checkering at the wrist. they did a pretty fair job. i stuck a 2x7 nikon on it, and next season it'll get carried to the woods for squirrels.

Still have part of a brick of Zappers. Not particularly accurate in most of my rifles, but they pack a bite and a bark. They are even louder than CCI Velociters in my longer barreled rifles. Even worse in a stock 1022.
As for 581/582 triggers, they are nearly identical in design to M788 centerfire triggers and can be "jiggered" a bit for better performance. Both respond well to some judicious honing, lubing and spring replacement, if one knows what they're doing?
Just finished redoing the trigger on a 582 barreled action I picked up last year fer cheap. Works fine now, didn't work at all when I got it, for various reasons. Someone had buggered the trigger internals. What I need now, is a stock for it.
I prefer the 581 because it does have a detachable magazine. Have both original 5 and 10 rounders, no issues with either.
If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.

Natchez also has 10 round magazines for the 541/581. Natchez 541/581 Magazine I have no experience with 10 round Magazine on my 581, but I'm still using the original 5 shot clip that came with the rifle and I have a new OEM 5 shot magazine for it also. When I first bought the gun new in the early 70's, I was told to buy a spare clip because they were plastic, so I did, but have never had an issue with the original one.

I've owned a few of the 510/511/512/513 series, but I grew up in a home that was primarily Browning, Colt, Savage, S&W, and Winchester. I have always found the 51x, 58x, and 59x series to be good shooters, even with the simple triggers on the 51x series.

where do I get a lighter spring We had a kit from Brownells, I believe. Just trial and error until we found one that gave a pull that was desirable.

I have a 581 that I got for Christmas in 1967 ($44.95). The original mag still works, but balks once in a while, possibly from a weak spring. I did pick up a replacement years ago that now gets used most of the time. Since I mostly shoot my CZ these days, it should last forever ( at least MY forever). I would like to find the single-shot adapter some day. In general, tube-feed guns are supposed to give more trouble as they age, but I never had one that long.
I've often thought about replacing that plastic thing on the barrel with something more seemly, but never figured out anything that would be easy enough for my meager skills and equipment. Very long ago I did replace the front sight with a Williams Shorty ramp and bead, and a Redfield peep that attaches to the receiver grooves.
I suggest getting some action-proving rounds, and buy the first one you find that works well. Or a 580, if you can find it.
What fresh Hell is this?

For those inclined, this 788 modification is supposed to work on the 58X Remington's.

Yes sir. This is the way I have my 581 set up, and I have my trigger set at 1.5lb or so, and it is sweet.
