Walk in the door act like nothing happened ask when supper is going to be ready if she gives you lip tell her get in the car and take her out if she refuses leave her there and you go eat. Grab a carton of cans, slip around to a mates place and get him to fire up the BBQ and sit around drinking and shooting the breeze until four in the morning...then wander on home and go to bed.
A few things you will have achieved by doing this, you will have had a feed (which you won't be getting at home), you will have had some good conversation, you will have forgotten all about the pissy mood your wife is in, and if you roll up at home as drunk as a monkey and reeking of grog there is a pretty good chance your wife will forget about the cranky dog text as well.
