Charlie: Was wondering if there would be a problem with setting up stresses in a barrel by turning down to a smaller diameter. I have a nice Shilen stainless in a #5 contour 26" long 7mm-08 already chambered, It is a takeoff and the last owner didn't like it because of its rate of twist, Too fast for cast bullets he said. It is 1-9 twist. It has a perfect bore and would like to turn it down to a #2 contour for a 722 action i have. What do you think? Thanks for your time, Swede96.

<br>No problems if it is done correctly. You need a taper attachment for the lathe and it needs to be supported fully when contouring. Best theing to do is call Doug Shilen at 972-875-5318 and ask if they would do it for you. One thing to keep in mind: It will not be a match grade barrel at that contour. You cant turn a barrel that same and not affect the bore. Doug can explain this in great detail. Thats not just a Shilen barrel that is any barrel. Folks will say"our barrels vary .0001" . Thats fine and good but that is before they are contoured or fluted. Ask a barrel manufacturer to let you watch them air guage the same barrel ten times in a row and look at the different numbers you get. But dont worry. You cant hardly get bullets that are less than .001 so in a hunting rifle espically it doesnt matter. Just for grins , air guage a factory barrel sometime.
