Oh, don't mention to them about the French serving in the sandbox, either.

Yup. First Free French Brigade stopped the unstoppable Rommel dead in his tracks and bought the British 8th time to get to El Alamein. Bir Hakeim Libya. What was left of the brigade initiated there pull out, thru mine fields and artillery, only after running completely out of ammo.

Royal 22nd Regiment: Canada's Fighting 'Van Doos'

During the First World War, Canada decided to create a military unit that would represent its French-speaking population. As soldiers and peacekeepers, the Royal 22nd Regiment the famed "Van Doos" have been among Canada's vanguard in both World Wars, and in hotspots that include Korea, Cyprus, Congo, Bosnia and East Timor. The distinct language and culture of the regiment have afforded unique opportunities, and posed frequent challenges.

Suppose the bulk of his Grande Armee were Corsican as well?

Truth of the matter is, the French actually fought very well during WWI. The biggest military blunders in WWI were English, not French.

Yeah, it was.

Another footnote in history about the courage of the French, if it weren't for the French infantry standing and fighting the Germans 'til the last minute, all of those soldier would not have been evacuated form Dunkirk. Most would have been slaughtered.
A British General at the time compared those French Infantrymen to the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae.

Very true. The only difference between our communist here in the states, and the French communist, is the French commies have never hid the fact they were communist. Communism has been a fact of life In France since well the days of "the Paris Commune".

Interesting parallel. French troops leaving for and returning from indochina in the 40's and 50's were treated the same was as many US vets were here by "college activists" in the 60's and 70's.

Ed, I had a friend who lost 8 uncles at Verdun. His grand dad was the only survivor of those 9 brothers. They were all in the 137eme regt Inf. They all died within 10 minutes.

Fast forward. His granddad called back into service 1939, was a captain in the same unit in 1940. They burned their regimental colors on the beach. They had exhausted all their ammo. They had been scrounging rounds from Hotchkiss trays for their rifles. They were still using mostly WWI arms and equip.

I believe it was the 95eme regt out of ammo, made a bayonet charge at the tetgenham (sic) bridge, then countered the German advance with a second bayonet charge until they were wiped out.

KW, that is something that most Americans are incapable of understanding. The depth of the French sacrifice during WWI was truly remarkable. 4% of the population dead, and another 10% wounded. That's greater then the loses we suffered during the "Civil" war when Americans were killing Americans.
