My friend informed me he is the proud owner of a 505 Gibbs Magnum. Empty brass is five bucks a pop! whelennut

Everyone finds their stupid factor level some time. It's all fun until you find what too much is. Glad he likes it (but that ain't what determines manhood.)

I remember seeing rounds at Jud Bailey's gunshop up by Newport and I determined I had no great interest in firing one.

This same guy once was goaded into buying a .378 Weatherby with a muzzlebrake and two mercury recoil reducers in the buttstock. I thought he had learned his lesson. I sold my Model 70 Super Grade African .458 after reading about detached retinas. whelennut

I too am in the process of buying a 505 Gibbs, just for the WOW factor of owning one. I have fired the 500 Nitro Express 3 1/4", the Jeffrey and the Gibbs, none are nice from the bench, but offhand is just fine. I don't know about detached retina's, never had a problem with either my 416 Rigby or 458 Lott.
Cheers.

I just read Chuck Hawks recoil chart. Noticed the 500 N.E. firing a 570 gr. bullet @ 2150 =74.5 lbs. of recoil. Also 12 ga. 3.5" mag w/ 1 7/8 goose loads =75 lbs. of recoil. I figure in a good season I shoot about a case (250) shells. I guess I'll take one of those shirts in XXL then. Kevin

Willing to bet he won't burn the Barrel out. I've got one and that bets a lock. Gunner a buddy of mine here had one in the back of the safe......bout the time i got up the nerve to shoot the damn thing he told me he sold it....bastard.....keep in mind the most powerful round i had shot at that point was a 300 magnum.....took a bit to work up the courage to ask to shoot it....well if you consider 6 months a bit

I've got a 500 Jeffery. I can tell you, that after you shoot it a 375 H&H recoil feels like a 270. I also have a 7 1/2 lb 375 Weatherby.
The 500s are fun to shoot, just don't shoot too many rounds in a day (5 is about right) or you may develop a flinch. And don't shoot it off of the bench once it's sighted in.
Regards,
Chuck

Sounds like a real drooler. As in after you shoot it, you drool ...
But I would shoot it anyway. The 7.5 lb 375 Wby sounds horrible.

It's an XCR II. It weights 7.5 lbs unloaded with scope. With 375 H&H factory it's actually very mild. With Weatherby factory 300g Noslers at 2750 fps it's a little snappy. That's the 375 Bee in the bottom of the picture. I replaced those ugly nickel scope rings with CeraKoted Talley QRs ...

I can attest that a 375 Weatherby is no pussy cat. I shot one for the first time in 1972 at the tender age of 26 and after the 4x Weaver came back and cracked me between the eyes decided I had enough of a .375 anything. I can't imagine how it would have been from the bench.
For some reason, I'd still like to have a Ruger No.1 in 375 H&H anyway.

I got to shoot a .505 Gibbs and a .600NE double this past weekend, and while they were manageable, I wouldn't want to make a habit of shooting them. I doubt my shoulder or my wallet would take that kind of pounding on a regular basis.
That said, the owner also had a .500 Jeffrey that was some 2-1/2 lbs lighter than his .505 Gibbs rifle. I was not brave enough to try that one out.

My recoil tolerance, for good accurate placement, stops dead in its tracks at the 416 Rigby of mine. I do not like 458 Lott rifles, so anything larger is also going to leave me cold. Oh, I would shoot one to just have done it, but my big medicine DGR is and always will be my well travelled 416 Rigby.

The nice thing about the 500 Jeffery and the 505 Gibbs is that after you've shot two or three rounds with them, a 375 H&H feels like an 06 ...
