Part of high b.p. medicine -- sure is rough stuff.
Combined with Losartan at double former dose of that.
Supposed to help dump Na (alias "water pill").

Anyone else just getting started controlling blood pressure?

Been fighting extremely high BP for a year and quite a number of meds.

Just restarted Norvasc but this time with HCTZ thrown in. Neither is raising hell with me......yet. The Norvasc alone worked last time but caused swelling in my legs, so the doc added back in 25mg HCTZ with it this time.

We'll see.

I've had good luck with Triamt/HCTZ and Metoprolol ER. I have been taking them for a long time no side effects that I can see so far.

rough? what is going on?

Rough is the stuff ( can't remember names) that makes you cough all the time

That's Lisinopril.

They have Lisinopril with or without HTCZ. The HTCZ is the part that gets rid of excess water, and you better be ready to take a leak... it's going to happen.

I have had it both ways.

I was on Lisinopril with HTCZ. I had constant sinus drainage and was tired all of the time.

Lisin with HTCZ is pretty benign. Been on it 10 years or so. My numbers are right where they should be. Lisinopril or Prinvil brand name is an ACE inhibitor that's been on the market for years. HTCZ is hydrochlorothiazide and is a diuretic (makes you pee to reduce volume). Both are safe and have been on the market forever.

The cough you speak of is ACE induced cough. If that side effect shows up, it's usually in the late afternoon if you take your meds in the morning. Tell your doc and simply try a different ACE.

I just took a Cholrthalidone, which is an HCTZ supersized, a Toprol XL, A Clonidine, 2 Amlodipine, and 2 Lisinopril. With all of that, I STILL might need a Nitro Rescue pill sometime soon. Then there are the brain and pain pills.....

BP is murderous with my clogged up Kidneys stopping up the works.

Back on topic, I never noticed HCTZ having any side effects with me, but maybe it is hard to tell with so much else going on.

Good luck with your BP, and don't screw around with it or your meds. I have seen guys our age have a bad stroke, and I would much rather just croak.

For a year after my heart attack, I took lasics, (furosemide) every day, along with a horse pill sized KlorKon. When my Doc was sure I would not die as the result of water filled lungs, he took me off of that.
I still keep a current prescription, and pop one if my BP happens to spike.

Just massive headache and dizziness, but tree pollen is here again and there's a whole asthma medicine regimen with me going on. Thanks for the input, all of y'all!

60 mg Nifedical and 10/12 mg Lisinopril-HCTZ and all is good. BP is low, no side effects for years.

Just spent 3 days in the hospital. One of the side affects is that it doesn't allow you to get rid of calcium. HCTZ along with taking above the recommended dosage of Tums daily caused my calcium level to go over 15. This typically indicates final stages of cancer. I was also in renal failure. Thankfully a kidney specialist was able to make the connection - I no longer take HCTZ or Tums! First indication that something was wrong was severe constipation and blood pressuer dropped to 65/40.

Still trying to get mag. and potassium levels stabilized.

Three weeks post Congestive Heart Failure and they've got me on Coreg, Lipitor, and Lisinopril. Also on lasics. No bad side-effects noted yet. Hoping to be able to eventually cut back on the cocktail.

A person can come close to eliminating blood pressure problems without medication, but it's easier taking a cocktail of pills than it is making lifestyle changes. Mom had dangerous blood pressure issues. She lost weight, started walking, cross-country skiing, eating healthy, many of the items on this list and wow, no longer needed blood pressure meds. Some can do it, some can't. Consider it, however.

Well, at least you reminded me of a joke. (Thanks for that.)

So, a guy gets his doctor to do a thorough physical to find out what's wrong. Nothing doing, and as a last resort the doc asks him, "Hey, do you smoke?" "Why, no doc, I don't and cain't say I drink neither." To which the doctor replies, "Rats. It would help ya to quit!"

I'm sure being out of work for six years now and being caretaker for my 89-year-old father since six months ago has nothing to do with my high b.p. Smokers would say I don't and drinkers would say the same about my alcohol intake. Until last week, all I was on was a beginner dose of Losartan. (Of course you could insist on telling me I'm fat and old at 57.)

cool
