I killed a 4x4 bull in Oregon last season with a Tikka T3 SS in 7mm-08. 140 Partition, DRT.

My brother killed a 3x3 mulie opening day of deer season with his T3 SS 7mm-08 using the same load. 47.0 grains Big Game, WLR primer.

My thoughts on rifle/caliber and bullet selection.

My first thought was a .308 or a 7mm-08. Rifle either a Tikka or a Rem 700 in SPS. Neither will break the bank or be to much trouble to resale need be.

Bullet. hmmmm I've alot of experience with a 7mm-08 and 140gr partitions. Lately I'm thinking the .308 with a 130TTSX might just be the cats meow.

I can handload for her.

The "gackster" in me says to get the 2014 Rem SPS in .260 and give the 140 partition a go or the 120TSX a go.

I'd just go .243 but? I know it will kill elk dead as hell but we all know a 7mm-08 or a 308 is a more responsible solution.

Anyway, if your buying your 22yr old daughter a rifle tomorrow with deer and elk the main "bounty" what rifle/caliber are you grabbing tomorrow morning when the shop opens.. smile I know this has been beat to death here, but what the [bleep]... smile

Shag,

It's all about the rifle.........

Have her handle and or shoot as many different models as possible.

When she finds one that fits, purchase that one in your favorite cartridge from 6mm to 30 caliber or so.

I assume you load , you can then tailor the cartridge performance vs recoil towards whatever game shes after.

can't find anything to fault with taking a hard look at a .270, low recoil, plenty of performance

ime, bullet technology has changed the game immensely. Calibers I'd have been hesitant to use for some applications in my youth are now players in the game, thanks to bullet design.

338 federal would be good out to 400 yards for all of the above listed game. It makes a big exit hole.

Seems to me a good 270 would do the job, do it with a good assortment of factory loads if need be, and do it with a moderate amount of recoil and a minimum amount of fuss...I know, it's SO common, but it's common for a reason.

I bought my daughter a Rem 700 Stainless steel mountain rifle in 7mm-08. That was 12 years ago, many years before I discovered the Tikka T3 lite stainless in 308.

You can't go wrong with either one.

I think finding a stock that fits is more important than cartridge. Make sure it is short enough, but get the eye relief to the scope right. You don't want her to get scope bitten.

My sons started with a .260, and then graduated to .270 win as their "lifetime" gun. If elk was a less frequent prey, we could have easily stayed with the .260.

I had a 19 year old that wanted/needed her own rifle, and when I asked her what she wanted, she said, "A 30-06 - just like Mom has." Trouble is that she was a southpaw. And she is 5'4" tall, and slender. I found a super deal on a LH Winchester 70 in 30-06, never been shot. Came with two factory stocks, and Talley rings.

I bought it and got a local fellow to trim the stock to fit her perfectly, and added a Pachmyr Magnum recoil pad. Next I went to the manuals to find an easy to shoot practice load. Settled on Winchester PP bulk 150s, and a moderate load of Blue Dot. She shot it like a pro -- figured she would. She shot the 243 Win well too.

Moved on to hunting bullets -- 150 TSX with some H4895 - getting right around 2840 ft/sec, nice gentle push, and very accurate. Recoil was not bad. The rifle is not light.

Then she married Mr. Flanagan from Dublin Ireland, and moved away. Son-in-law #2 was showing some interest in shooting, and he is also a southpaw. I gifted it to him. He loves it. (Why not?) He dropped a Rifle Basics trigger in it, and it is a very nice rifle. He has killed a few deer with it.

For my gals, I think stock fit is critical to recoil management, and then a lighter bullet with a faster burning powder, and you're off to the races.

Best of success i your endeavours.

Savage Ladyhunter in 7-08 or 308 is how I would go. My wife loves hers. 20 in barrel, very light, nice stock. very, very accurate.

The Ruger Compact is a very short barrel and is loud. Loudness is the only complaint my daughter has with her Ruger.

I just gave my daughter a Rem M700 classic in .300 Savage for her 11th birthday. She wants to hunt elk asap, I almost went .308 but I was able to trade straight across for this one. I'll probably have to find a different stock to cut down but she's already 5'7", so maybe not. After moved into the new house, I'll have her working with 125 grain NBT and 130 Barnes bullets.

You know the gackster is right....

Next I'd have to look at the RAR stainless, Tikka SLSS, Rem MTN SS, or Forbes 20 - all in 7-08.

If $ isn't an issue, NULA .260, of course. :-)

Ok not 22 but 23 and she grabbed my 270. Of the calibers you mentioned, mine would love everyone but if forced to pick one she said the 260.

^This.

However, I'd suggest a cartridge from 6.5mm to .30. That extra .5mm will make all the difference. grin

For myself, I'd see if there were any rifles in my own arsenal that spoke to her. It might be a neat way to pass on your love both of hunting, and of the kid.

Let us know how it shakes out.

what about the .260 nosler? i know its new but they have a ton of options for bullet selection. Lots of people like the 25-06. with the right stock a .270 can be rather comfortable to shoot as well. Im having shoulder problems so I'm thinking about necking my shot out .300 wby down to 6.5mm. less recoil, faster, and flatter, with better b.c.'s.

I bought a Ruger American in 7-08 for my daughters. Super accurate, light weight, not expensive and light recoil. I load 120 NBTs and TTSXs with RL15, which has always shot well in 7-08s for me with similar performance to and less recoil than a 270.

A 7mm-08 should be fine. Don't know about those rifles though. Get one that fits her. Not one you like.

I really like the savage lady hunter stock and the Kilimanjaro artemis stock. Both designed specifically for women. I've ask the guys at McMillan several times if they would make one, but the answer has always been no demand.

If you don't like the savage and can't swing the artemis (who can?) look at the monte carlo stocks and the weatherby stocks. They seem to fit the gals a bit better than the standard straight stocks.
