Can someone please post a pic of a barrel site with the elevator mounted so I can see how it's suppose to sit. I slid it under the site but it doesn't look right. I have both parts of the lower picture. Or possibly describe the position. I slide it under the site with the low end pointing forward. Not sure if the left right wind adjustment comes off to slide the elevator tabs over the site or does the entire elevator sit under the site and just slide front and back, it just seems to look like the site is sitting too high when I install it by slipping it under the site.

Ya, do you have to take the knurled adjustments off to get it on there?

Drift the sight out, put the elevator on, reinstall sight. Put something between the barrel and sight to protect the barrel bluing then when done, slip it out.

Do you really need to take the sight right off the barrel?

But doesn't the elevator have to slip over the site from the windage end. I thought the windage adjustment can be removed?
I would like to know how the windage adjustment knob is removed to slip on the elevator if it does even get removed.
My elevator has the same tabs as the pic madog posted. So it does not slip under the site on it's own the tabs on the elevator are in the way.

Rooster, The windage can be removed, the knurled knob, on at least one side, is held by a very small cross pin that has to be driven out it then can be screwed off the windage adjustment screw and then the screw can be turned out. I would not suggest doing this and I do not think it would help any, might even make it harder.

What I did on one I have was to hook one of the tabs on one side of the sight and then pry the other side up and over, use something that will not mark it. I then had to straighten the tabs on the elevator slightly but that was not a problem.

If you remove the windage parts the elevator still would have to be pried open to get past the two tabs sticking out the side of the sight that rest on it, that might require spreading it farther than the method I used early elevators did not have the small tabs on the top, much easier to install.

Thanks Gene, you have made it clear what I have to do. Not a job I'm looking forward to. So I guess I would of been better off looking for the elevator without the tabs, they appear to be the same width, I'm going to try and find one of those and put the bendy install on hold for the time being? Thanks for everyone's input.

HA HA HA, I hope we all had a good laugh, once the site is removed the elevator slips on like butter over the site the site it self is narrower at the dove tail then I just put the site back.. What can I say my first go at a .22HP site. I was afraid of bubba. At least she is back in original condition with all the parts in place. laugh laugh laugh

Use a tang sight. Heck only someone under thirty has good enough eyes for the extra fine windgauges. GW

Anyone have an extra sight elevator for the above windgauge sight that they would sell? GW

I would have sworn that I had done this once before and off the rifle I though there was enough clearance to slide the sight into the elevator without having to bend the tabs.... maybe I dreamed it.... I think that I have one in my sight box... maybe I will pull it out and play with it this evening.

I looked at one I have with the tabs - when I got the elevator one of the sides was bent out slightly, making it real easy to put on. Looking at it now, with the side straightened, I find it will slip just off when tilted to one side but will just catch when tilted the other way, requiring a little bit of prying to get it on or off.

Once the site is removed from the barrel the elevator slips in under the site like butter the site it self is narrower at the dove tail, so no bending no prying as long as the site is removed from the barrel it absolutely goes on no problem, then I just put the site back into the dove tail, holding the elevator and site away from barrel to avoid scratching it with one hand, and tap the dove tail with a rubber hammer with the other, all done. I basically did what you said in the first place Fireball2.

Most often those rear sights are very difficult to remove so you were lucky this one moved so well. I cringed when I heard the advice...

Ya, those sights have dovetails that are bent underneath instead of solid metal.

I've never taken one of those off but I have taken off Savage rimfire sights that were bent metal tab dovetails and it's usually not a good outcome.

+1, I need one as well. OP, glad it went together for you. Always nice to bring a rig back to spec.

One of my most satisfying "saves" was this little hummer I found for a Remington model 25 25-20 carbine that was wearing the wrong sight.
