I am looking for some information about a model 56 springfield rifle by stevens. The question I have is should there be a spring on the firing pin. Mine has a problem with the firing pin dropping down preventing the round from chambering. I can hold the muzzle up and no problem. Seems like a spring would keep the firing pin held back.

Since Springfield is a brand name used by Savage for its lower grade, less finish, firearms, there is likely to be a Savage or Stevens rifle that is the same as the Springfield 56. I think, but am not sure, that the Springfield 56 may be the same basic rifle as the Savage Models 4c, 4cd, 4d, and 4e. Also the Stevens Models 84c, 84cd, 84d, and 84e.

GPC has the Springfield 56, 56 Ideal, and 56C listed, but no real schematic.

Good luck.

Stevens did make and sell a mdl 56C, as a Stevens. I'm sure they are similar, and yes, they do have a fireing pin spring. If your mdl 56 Springfield will cock and fire, but yet the fireing pin will extrude thru the fireing pin hole, then I'll bet that the fireing pin is broken. With a fair bit of thumb pressure, I can force my fireing pin to extrude thru the hole, but as soon as I release the pressure, it goes back into the bolt.

Page 28 of an undated Savage/Stevens/Fox component parts catalog, the has the only reference of the 56C that I can find outside of GPC. The wording suggests that the 56c belongs in the same family as the Savage 4c, 4cd, 4d, 4e, 4m, 84c, 84cd, 84d, and 84e bolt action clip fed .22s.

If you email your USPS mailing address to me at remguy260cox.net, I can mail you a copy of that page.
