I have approxiamtely $1200 US to spend on a stockmaker, not including the wood. Ineed a long length of pull and a metal grip cap and buttplate. the action is a Montana Rifleman short action in 6.5X55 with a custom Lothar Walther #5130 profile. The stock need to resemble an English stalking rifle such as early 1920s and 30s Westley Richards rifles.
Anyone know of a 'Smith?

Try D&D in Troy, Mi. They do Beautiful stocks. Also Williams Gun Sight will do a mighty fine stock. They had some of thier work in one of the Rags a couple of months ago.

Dominick Pisano of San Antonio Tx does good looking stocks. I have examined his work at gunshows and he is who I will probably use if I have one done.

I have several custom stocks by Larry Caudill in Albuquerque. His work is first rate and his prices are reasonable. lcaudill flash.net. He may have changed his e-mail address recently--if that one doesn't work, let me know and I will call him and get an update.

33, check this guy out. I've never delt with him before, but there is another guy that posts here that has. He's posted a few pics of his rifles and they look wonderful. Also, check out his Gunstock Gallery page. He has a pattern VERY close to what you're looking for (image 10&11). Now for the down side. He's a little out of your budget, but look at it like this. It's gonna take 6-12 months to do your stock and he wants a 30% deposit. (I may be out of line with this next stament. If so please excuse) You should be able to raise the remainder while waiting for it to be complete. Anyway, give the guy a look. Terry RMS Gunsmithing

If I come across a little skeptical, please bear with me. $1200 for a stock? Not counting the wood? You don't want a custom stock, what you will end up with is something qute a bit less than custom for that price; something like a Rifle with a Boyd's or something similar. If you want a true custom, one that will fit you and done to your satisfaction, it will cost you at least another $1200.

fortunately that is not the case. I have found several that will do this work and have not only referrences t odie for, but also guns in magazines and articles. Ops, I didnt mention someone else will do the checkering.
this is the stock minus the wood and checkering.

333_okh, No suggestions, but a question and a request.
Q - With the references to the guys who'll do a stock for $1200, are they including inletting and bedding?
R - Please consider posting the results of your long search for a stockmaker and what you've learned. I'be interested, and certainly others would, too.

Since this is a Custom Stock ie. Custom fit-LOP-Cast on/off I'm assumig you'd want to be somewhat close to the work being done. Help us out and give your location. It might help with your search.

Someone here sent me a private message with GOSTOMSKIS GUNSMITH SERVICE as a recommendation. I have a few questions, but I must have deleted the private message. Can you please send me another PM?
Also, if anyone else has had work done by this shop please let me know?

333: Here's a pic of the stock Robert Szweda did for me. Very short turnaround believe it or not.

Also, if anyone else has had work done by this shop please let me know? The rifle you have from Robert is really nice. Mexican Mauser? The stockwork is much of what I am looking for. As to the quote above. Has anyone used GOSTOMSKIS GUNSMITH SERVICE ???? I would love to just hear a little about thier work!

Examined a 1903 stocked by him at the Valley Forge and Allentown PA shows about a year ago. In my opinion very fine workmanship in the classical style. And I know good gunsmithing when I see it.
