17 HMR or 22LR
17 HMR doesn,t blow them up nearly as bad as some say .
Headshots no problem at all, behind the shoulder yes there is damage but I have had a lot of damage from 22 LR CCI Mini -Mags Hollowpoints as well with the same shot placement .
I dont like subsonics, tried them dont like as I have seen to many crawloffs.
Big fox squirrels are especially tough.
YMMV

I haven't had any problems with crawloffs on grey squirrels. I would agree that the subsonic probably wouldn't have the power to use on a fox squirrel, but I wouldn't shoot a fox squirrel anyway. We just don't have very many fox squirrels around here and I've always let the ones I have seen walk

I always wondered what one of those tasted like. They eat a lot of pine seed and I figured that they would taste like they had been soaked in turpentine. smile

First choice is a 22lr in a sub-sonic solid. I shoot greys and reds alike up to ranges that seemed unobtainable just a few years past. I do enjoy my 17hm2 on occasion when those walnut/pecan trees are in a fence row of a pasture and 100+ yard shots are the norm, not the exception. I do not recommend ever shooting a squirrel anywhere but the head with a 17 caliber rimfire.

To each his own but Sub sonic solid is the LAST round I would use .
Standard velocity with solids is as Low as i would go and head shots only with these.

Despite the rumors,17 HM2 is still being produced. Just picked up 2000rnds of newly produced/shipped Hornady ammo last week.....

I like how they tense up on a limb after taking a 22 short in the head.

Benjamin Marauder .25 cal
Quiet, accurate, hits HARD and doesn't ruin meat. Cheap to shoot. Air and pellets are not hard to find.
Love mine!

I have hunted squirrels with the 22 rifle from my childhood to present and only in the last few years i have been using the 17 HMR. i have used nothing more deadly on BushyTails than the 17 cal rimfire . I'm still amazed just how accurate the 17 HMR is from my rifles .

It appears that CCI/Hornady has been making a few runs of 17HM2, so there may not be any need to opt for a lesser alternative.
