Buddy of mine came over last night with a Remington 788 that wont eject properly, the rounds will not clear the ejection port. My first guess is that its the ejector or extractor. Any other ideas what it might be and the fix? How tough is it to change out the extractor and or the ejector?

Thanks

I would also be interested in the answer to this. My 788 in .222 has somewhat the same problem. It will eject but somewhat feebly.

Our .308 is in the same boat, unless we yank hard on the bolt the fired case just falls back on to the follower. This is fine at the range for saving brass but not for hunting. Yes it is cleaned after every outing.

My recently acquired 788 in .308 did that. I checked all the usual suspects - extractor, ejector, bolt face. After seeing a post on one of the forums, I leaned down and watched closely to see the case hitting the windage turret on the scope and bouncing back. The ejection port is small and high and leads to this interference. My solution was to rotate the scope 90 deg. Looks dumb, but now works perfectly.

Thanks Robert, I will check your idea out as this could be my problem also.

Back when Remington was still supporting the 788, I sent mine back with a broken bolt handle. They replaced the bolt but it did not have the plunger and plunger spring installed so I had the same ejection problems that have been discribed here.

check to see if your mag spring is over compressed. If left loaded to long they lose tension.
