they are beautiful... Well now that's just uncalled for. Mine (that I'm so excited to have) is just as mean and ordinary a 99 as there could be. - made in 1940. - an R I believe (Murray's full details of neither the R nor the RS completely match my rifle, but I think it's probably an R) - front sling swivel stud drilled on the double ring line (wrong X) - drilled for a tang sight (wrong if it's an R X) - drilled for a scope (bad X) - rear sight broken on one side (bad! X) - front sight whanged over to the left with the bead gone (bad X) But... - the price was right v- the rifle, as a rifle, is sound (stock, chamber, barrel, magazine, etc.) v- so now I can scope me an older Savage guilt free v (picture shows p.o.s. scope that came on rifle) - and drag it through the woods with a light heart vAnd, hey!, a fellow has to start somewhere, and this was a pretty good one to "get my feet wet" on I think. I am (of course ) currently strategizing what my next 99 (s) will be. Maybe I'll start a new thread and see if y'all might help me parse a few decision making issues I'm pondering. James .

James if you have a 30's R, you should quit while you're still ahead. These will soak up excess cash in a hurry and some not so excess.
You have a good start. Welcome to the forum.

James, your 1940 rifle with fluted comb and forearm with double lines is definitely a prewar 99R. Sling studs are aftermarket and the tang sight holes are standard on all pre-1960 1895/1899/99s. Not a collector, but you are right in that it will make an awesome hunting rifle. I like the prewar 99R's and 99T's a lot, classy guns.
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

Ironically, James, just like the loggah rifle thread, you mention already looking for your next one. One, even the KING rifle of all rifles, the MOTHER of all MOTHERS, just ignites the fire for more rather than quenching it. Mercy, where and when does it end?

Not a collector, but you are right in that it will make an awesome hunting rifle. I like the prewar 99R's and 99T's a lot, classy guns. Calhoun, You are wonderfully anticipating a number of my questions, important questions. 1- When you say "fluted comb" are you referring to the "swale" (I'll call it) just above the pistol grip checkering? Is that what Murray refers to as a "grooved comb"? 2- I MUST verify - you say tang sight holes are standard on all pre-1960 1895/1899/99sAs in... every single pre-1960/pre-million(ish)/pre-Westfield Savage 99 comes factory tang d&td for a tang sight? Like... every one, from the 1899 A/B/C/CD DeLuxe through the EG and T (and a few Fs)? All of them? See, as I was reading Murray, there are only two early rifles that come with a tang sight, the K DeLuxe and the RS. Bummer for a guy who might want a tang sight. But hes just talking about the rifle COMING WITH the actual sight itself, eh? But all the rest are tang sight ready. Which means... a man could get ANY(?) pre-60 99 and install a tang sight on it? And that would not be seen as harming the rifle? Do I got this all correct? If so, this means a LOT to my decision making process. (Ill explain fully [with pictures] in a subsequent post.) James .

Only certain models came from the factory with tang sights installed but prior to '60 all pre-mils were drilled for them.
