The only thing that would wreck the sound quality would be mistreatment by you: wetness, wrong chalk, over zealous sanding of sound surfaces.

Treat and handle with care and youll keep it for a long time. Plenty to choose from out there.

Is this your 1st box call? Have you worked one before? If not, go easy, get a HS Strut, or pony up a bit more for a mass produced Lynch before you go custom. If it suits you, then go custom.

If able, find a friend who will lend you theirs so you see if you dig them at all and can work well with them. They're not for everyone.

I would go the custom route. A good custom call will be backed by the maker pretty much forever barring blatant abuse. And there are some really good call makers with prices that run from about $60 for a field grade call to several hundred for a fancier product. Fancy calls don't necessarily sound better, just look nicer if that matters to you.

As a collector of turkey calls, I can tell you that there are a lot of good call maker out there. The one I recommend is Paul Meek of Raleigh MS. He makes a variety of calls to fit any pocket book or hunting situation. As a matter of fact, I just took #25 with his scratch box. Give Paul a call at 601-782-4898 and he will fix you up to your style of hunting etc. You can also go to his web-site paulmeek.com. Just another note, he designed a call for me for long range calling out here in California we call the Terminator that is absolutely the best long range call I have ever used. Anyway, good luck

Paul makes a great call for sure. My mother in law was from the same home town and my wife from a few minutes away. His stuff is hard to beat. I've also got 2 calls from Jerry White (Dad's calls) and I've been using a Twisting Creek call as well. Hard to beat those 3 in my opinion. There are tons of great call makers out there. If you can spend $100 you will find lots of great choices.

Tim Bullock, Albert Paul, Al & Josh Shoemaker and Jerry White are all calls I use and they all have a turkey built right in.

Albert Paul is fantastic too. A buddy has a couple and I've killed a lot of birds in front of one. Can't go wrong. Sorry I didn't mention that before.

Ben Lee made a great call. I have an old Eddie Salter call that is my favorite. The calls that I have that I think sound the best are older calls that you probably would have found in a department store.

I've got a Ben Lee slate call and it is great except its to valuable to use out in the woods any more especially if you're as clumsy as me. Ben Lee was Paul Meeks Brother-in-law.
