I decided to put togwther a dedicated turkey gun this year. i settled on a Mossberg 835 with an M4 style adjustable stock, and a Tru Glo GobbleStopper red dot. i normally shoot Hevi-shot, but my local store was sold out so I decided to try a box of Winchester's new Longbeard loads. These are a lead pellet load, but the buffer is actually a liquid polymer, that is poured over the shot in the shot cup and allowed to harden. Upon firing, the shot column stays together in sort of a "slug" form. And then begins to break apart after leaving the barrel. This results in devastating patterns up close. Here is a laser measured forty yard pattern. Pictures are of both sides of the target

Yea, that was all they had for targets. For a lead load, i'm really impressed with these. And they are still considerably cheaper than Hevi-shot. I'm not a long range turkey shooter, but I wouldnt hesitate to touch off at 50 yards with this stuff

Several years ago I decided I needed my own muzzleloader. Got an Encore. While I was at it, I got a .25-06 AI barrel and a 12 gauge turkey barrel. That turkey barrel has exceeded all expectations. It's 24" with rifle sights and an extended choke tube. With 3" Federal turkey loads of 4's or 5's (I forget which) it will shred a beer can at 40 yards (much the same as the pattern shown.) When I've shot turkeys with it they just die.
Shot a couple turkeys on the driveway last year (targets of opportunity) with my duck gun (Beretta Ultima) and some 3 1/2" turkey loads I kept around just for that. Never patterned them. Two turkeys on the run at what I thought was a risky distance but they both just went straight down, never even twitched. Amazing what shotguns will do these days.

I'm gonna have to look for those. I'd've had a use for them on long range steel last week.

Them winchester's shoot great and they are way cheaper than hevi shot. Also no matter what anyone says hevi 7's are lighter than lead 6's. Plus the longbeards are faster than hevi-13

I could only find the Longbeard ammo in #4s, but I prefer #5s. The #4s patterned well, but I like the higher density with #5s. Maybe by next season they will be more readily available. I do know that I will buy the first bo of #5s that I come across.

Gitem, is that pattern 5s or 6s? And if you're shooting 3 1/2" out of that 835 with a M4 stock you are a dam sight tougher than I am.
They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

I was gonna try the federal HD 3" #7s this year till I saw the price on a box of 5 at bass pro. I remembered the add for the longbeards but couldn't find them anywhere. I have 3 3.5" #5 and 5 3" #6 winchester supremes left and can't find them anymore. So after these 3 and 5 I don't know what I'm gonna do, probably a box of double x winchesters. I would love to try the longbeards in my browning/indian creek .670 combo and my M1/terror .655 combo. My two favorite turkey guns and no bullets! It isn't like I have the time any dam ways, as of late I gotta schedule B Ms.
