Have any of you fellas used the new NF SHV scope they have just come on the market here in Australia

Is the glass the same as the other scopes, is it quality or just a cheap gimmick

I don't think many have used them yet since they're pretty new. I believe it's supposed to have the same glass as the NXS which is pretty good, but with a few features like zero stops left out to get the price down. I have no doubt it'll be a quality scope, nightforce doesn't make junk. Myself, I've decided zero stops are a must have on a turret scope so it's not for me plus it's too heavy for a hunting scope in my opinion. If you don't mind those two issues then I'm sure it'll be a great scope.

Here's a review I don't know if you've seen:

I just got one. I haven't had a chance to go out and play with it yet. I probably won't be able to for a while.

I love the feel of the turrets. They feel just like the old NXS turrets before they went to the high speed adjustments. I have been comparing it to 3-15 NXS and I can not tell a difference in the glass quality so far. I know Nightforce says it's not overbuilt like the NXS line but this thing is built like a tank. There is no cheap gimmick feel to this scope at all. I will report back if I get a chance to take it out any time soon.

IMO they made a mistake with the 56mm objective.

Mine is mounted with the low .885 Nightforce rings. I can still slide the bikini cover on. It's a tight fit but it works.

What's the mistake with the 56mm objective?

I am thinking of putting it on my .22-250 that will soon be improved

It is a spotlighting rifle for foxes and the 56mm objective is just fine for that

Thanks Jeremiah, the scope looks the part sitting on that rifle. Is there much weight difference between the SHV and the NXS ???

Is yours the illuminated model Jeremiah ?

Can you dim it right down

That is interesting you used the low mounts, what are the high ones for? 70mm

It's about 5oz lighter than the NXS.

Mine is not the illuminated model. I have never used the illumination in any of my NXS scopes so this was perfect for me.

The low rings will work just fine with a 56mm objective if your barrel is no bigger than a sendero contour.

Yep, it's a pretty heavy scope. It's just like a 3.5-15 NXS but with capped turrets. I really like the way they sat up these turrets to zero them. There is no little set screws like the non zero stop models. It has a big screw on the top of the turret. All you have to do is back it out and turn it to zero and tighten back up. I always hated the little set screws.

I'm sure that it is typical Nightforce quality through and through, but I think they should have kept the obj size to 50mm max. This scope most likely is aimed at the same market the new Bushnell LRHS was targeted for and they went with a 44mm obj. IMO, they (Bushnell) consulted the right folks and that is what they came up with.

I think the oddest part of the scope is only 10 MOA per revolution of the turret.

I like the concept otherwise.

I have an SHV on the way here and would have preferred a 42mm or 50mm objective but that wasn't an option and the rifle it goes on will arrive the same day so I pulled the trigger on the scope.

I also looked at the 2.5-10x42 NXS Compact and almost bought that one instead but it was a good bit more money and didn't have turret covers.

I'm going to be selling several of my old favorite Elite 6500's which were nearly perfect but I wanted to start turning turrets on my long range rifles and NightForce seems to be the clear leader in turret turning scopes.

Usually I'd feel the same way but this is a low magnification compact scope that's light enough to be used on a still hunt rifle you'd sling over your shoulder.... The turret caps could be very useful if you wanted to crawl through brush with it. It would save you having to constantly check to make sure the brush hadn't changed your turret settings.

Yep, those turret caps transform the 4-14x56 scope into a brush crawling, still hunting rig for sure. grin
