It was a terrific cartridge and very mild to shoot. John

I'd suggest IMR 7828 powder.

Fotis,
How does the 90 gr. NAB perform on WT sized game at 3,400+ fps.

REMINGTONJIM: Jim Cloward built my custom pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in 240 Weatherby back in 1990. I have been in love with the Rifle/cartridge ever since! My Rifle has a 27" Hart, stainless steel, medium heavy barrel. It is death on longe range Coyotes, Antelope and Deer. Normal sight-in verification groups (5 shots at 100 yards) are in the 4's. I use Norma brass, 52.0 grains of IMR 4831, Federal 210 M (match) primers and Sierra 85 grain HP/BT bullets. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Not worth a damn DF. Explosive to say the least. I shot 4 into deer and got zero exits, hence nonexistant blood trails. I shot one buck broad side in the ribs well behind the shoulder and it didn't even make it to the off ribs!! Pullit was there to witness. I dug pieces of one out and the lead had completely left the jacket despite them being "bonded." It was the remnant of the solid base with a grey tint to the cup side. That said, I was burning them at 3500fps. My brother shoots them at 3100 in a 6Rem and they do much better.

I had tried the 90 gr. Scenar and it was way too explosive. A chest shot on an average sized doe made soup out of the heart, lungs and liver. There were even a few kernals of corn in the soup, so the explosion got into the stomach.
Deer was DRT, but that's too many apples for a dime...
I then chest shot another doe with a 90 gr. SSII. The deer ran 30 yds and fell over. Good entrance and exit, just not that much damage in between.
I was thinking the 90 gr. NAB may be somewhere between those two bullets.
I plan to use the 100 gr. NPT at 3,250 fps this Fall. Was even considering the 90 gr. NAB, but after your experience, may just stay with the Partition.

I think I recall Dober talking up the 95 NBT in the 6-06.

I think I have my using load for the .240. 53 gr. Norma MRP with 100 NPT and Fed 210 primers. I'm using W/W brass I formed from 25-06 cases. I didn't clock it, my chrono battery was dead. I hope to check speed this weekend. Out of the 26" HS barrel, it should be pushing high 3,200's to 3,300 fps. One three shot group went .30" at a hundred last Sat. I just loaded another batch to try. I think this may be my Pronghorn set up for NM in August. The rig is lighter than the 6.5-284 and although the 6500 2.5-16 doesn't have a ballistic turret, this load shoots pretty flat. I'll make a cheat card for drop out to 400 yds, doubt I'll be shooting much farther than that. With a 225 yd. zero, it's 1.5" high at a hundred and the drop out to 400 isn't that bad. DF

When I was shooting the .240, a Weatherby Ultra Lighweight, my two favorite loads were the 90-grain Nosler E-Tip and 58.0 grains of Ramshot Magnum for just under 3400 fps, and the 100-grain Nosler Partition and 53.0 Norma MRP for about 3300. (The second was a dupe of the Weatherby factory load, which also shot very well.) Accuracy was well under an inch with both.

Ramshot Magnum was close runner up to the MRP load. Either would do the trick.

I think I recall Dober talking up the 95 NBT in the 6-06. I tried those and for some reason, the 100 gr. NPT grouped better than the 95 NPT. And, this gun won't stabilize a 105 Scenar. A lot of that could be due to the long, high ogive profile of the Scenar. Probably need more than the 10 twist, more like 8 or so to comfortably make that one work. The NPT is a fatter, shorter bullet than the Scenar. Now, the 85 NPT is a tack driver at 3,500 fps, with a half inch three group at 200 yds. I know, I know, just three shots and just one group... But, I'm afraid that bullet at that speed may be a bit too volatile. I like the idea of the slightly slower, slightly heavier 100 NPT for general use. And, at 400+ yds, I think I'll like 100 grs. better than 85 grs. DF

You tried the 80gr TTSX in it? Killed a few critters with that out of a .257 Wby. Mild load pushing them to 3700fps. Still electrocuted stuff and holdover? What's that?!

John John, I killed a WT doe last year with the .240 shooting an 80 gr. TTSX at 3,600 fps. Big spash, but damage in the wrong place. HUGE hematoma between angle of the shoulder and chest wall. Minimal damage inside the chest, inch or so in and out rib cage wounds, doe ran a hundred yards. Had to find her at night in the woods. DRT is a lot better, especially when it gets dark...! Hanging carcass. Double hands full of hematoma removed from the huge cavity you see. I want all or at least most of that devastation INSIDE the chest... This bullet didn't do what I wanted it to do. I'm going to try 100 NPT's and bet they'll beat this performance. And, I realize this is a sample of one medium size Louisiana doe... I have too many options to spend time messing with this load, which BTW, is super accurate. Yeah, holdover is what you do when you have 15" of drop at 400 yds and aren't using a turret or ballistic reticle... DF

Had something similar happen to me with a 95gr Ballistic Tip many years ago. Shot a fork horn with my 6mm pushing 95gr Bal Tips at about 3200. He was slightly quartering away at a little under two hundred yards. At the shot he went down. As I approached within about 100 yards he jumped up and started to leave so I hit him again and he went down for the count. Appeared that the first bullet turned and followed the rib cage between the rib cage and the shoulder, never penetrating the chest cavity. Weird stuff happens sometimes.
