Canada has very significant consumption taxes. Most goods and transactions are taxed this way. When our friends come down from BC they do a lot of shopping because many things are cheaper here.
The comment saying there was no housing crisis in Canada is correct. This is the main reason Canada looks better in relation to the US with regard to middle class wealth. Canadian real estate was not devalued. Try finding a decent home in Vancouver for much below a million dollars.

Perhaps it's the fact that the healthcare system isn't breaking the Canadian middle class? Here are some simple facts to help you fellers understand how things work up here in "Merica's Hat". We are a socialist county. We have about 35 million people here, and can't afford our health care system. Our health care system covers the very basics, and doesn't do it that well. I would have to be in very, very desperate shape before I felt I needed to go hospital emergency, as I know I would be there for several hours before getting attention. We did not have a housing crisis, as our money is managed by our government, and banks are regulated. Our "middle class" does most of the grunt work to keep this country moving. Our family size is shrinking, two kids is becoming more and more common. The things we buy are taxed incredibly, most often more than once. The cost of living is very high because of this. Our personal debt has increased, and continues to increase at an alarming rate. And, here is the real kick in the pants. The average tax bracket for the middle class here in Alberta is at about 44%!!! That is a 39% income tax bracket, plus a 5% federal goods and services tax. I have not included provincial tax in that figure in order to cover deductions. The average tax free day in Canada is in June!!! So...I certainly wouldn't get all excited about our middle class passing that of the middle class in 'Merica, because I don't think it has, really. Lower taxes, lower cost of living, and lower real estate prices see to that. Now, after my rant, I love my country, and while I don't always agree with our left leaning ways, we do have at the moment, a fiscally responsible conservative government and that does help. And, overall our quality of life is quite high, but don't kid yourselves, like anything else, we pay for it dearly. R.

Perhaps it's the fact that the healthcare system isn't breaking the Canadian middle class? Perhaps it's the fact that they don't need a big military budget due to the US next door which allows them to channel funds to health care. Considering all those I met (when living in Washington State) that were crossing the border for American Health Care that wasn't available in Canada their healthcare system may not be great tho.

Actually, they surpassed the US middle class largely due to their home values. They didn't have the mortgage collapse like we did. Yes, we watch TV shows on real estate in Canada, often times we see homes in Toronto that are valued at $500,000 that are really dumps that we would think were worth half that price...

Thanks, EDM,, it is nice to hear it from the people with first hand experience. We are righ behind you in taxes, but a long ways behind. I have been realizing when you are taxed at those rates, the value of the meat you shoot, the garden, the wood for heat is tax free and the value goes up 44%, like you say. I figure, the $1,200 bucks in heat I save is $ 1,200 bucks I don't spend and another $ 300 I saved in taxes cause I didn't have to make the $1,500 to pay for $ 1,200 in heat. This is the way we need to be to avoid taxes.

There's the truth. The Middle must shoulder the burden because the Upper Class is very small and already taxed to the brink of extiction or expatriation. The Lower Class that is sucking the money out of the system is very large. Socialists the world over don't get it. Their answer for a strained budget is never cut back on the give-a-ways, it is to find new ways to tax. There comes a point where that cripples those producing and it essentially stops ant chance of upward economic mobility. Europe has hit it, Canada is hitting it, and the US is nearly there. The result is an economy that has a contant unemployment rate of 8-15%, and an economy that runs from recession to mild growth and back to recession. Over time, it is basically stagnant.
