WOW .410?

Did you choot him at 3 yards while he was busy pukin over the wood pile there?

Is that a nice Western knife?

Give us some details of the hunt brother, and maybe a pic of the gun.

Nice job! Another scaly spawn of Satan sleeps wit da fishes.

Can I get an AMEN?

I hope to shoot my first gobbler this year with the same old Ithaca double that I shot my first one with 40 years ago. My father gave it to me a couple of years ago. Then, if I have time and all goes well, I have a .410 Mossberg pump I plan to use to fill my second tag. 20 yards out to do it.

Steve.

A .410 will do the job. I have a single shot .410 that patterns 71/2 3" federals pretty well. I'm not going to pop a turkey with it, but I could. smile.

Congrats. Details on the bird?

Dang...a 410! Hadn't heard of popping a turkey with one before but would imagine it's been done a bunch. I guess if you know how many pellets the gun will put in the kill zone (ideally 8-10) at X distance and stay within that range, you'd be good. Nice bird!

Well I did not intend to use a single shot 410. I was out at a friends ranch near Lampasas , TX by myself. Just a little get away and a place to shoot.

I had gone up on sat and spent the night. I shot a lot but had put all my guns and equipment in my truck as I was getting to head back home. I'd been inside for probably about an hour - took a shower, made breakfast , etc.

Barely opened the front door and there's the bird 20 yds from the house. The bird ran 35-40 yds to some brush/mesquite trees after I scared it. (Remember I had already put up all my guns). I look over at the wall of my friends cabin and there's his single shot 410 given to him as a kid. It was hanging on one of those wooden wall mounted gun racks with a small drawer on the bottom. I peek in the drawer and lo and behold, a box of 410.

So I think to myself... Might as well grab it just in case. (Didn't really think I'd hit anything with it). I sneak outside as quietly as possible. I spot the bird still in the mesquite cluster walking around pecking for whatever he can find. I'm hiding behind a tree about 25-30 yds from the bird. Well, I decide to go for it.

Bang! The bird flew/jumped up about 6-8 feet and flopped down. I couldn't believe that I hit it. Turned out to be a hen - which I kinda felt bad about but it was legal. She was still breathing when I came up to her so I gave her a mercy shot to the head/neck.

I hunt deer a lot but hadn't hunted large birds in over 10 yrs. my plucking and cleaning left some skill to be desired but I got 'er done. It was a blast!

Thank you Lord for a sweet gift!

HA!!

Terrific story, way to improvise. Too bad we dont got a pic of the gun. Gun porn is always good.

Way to slay the sneaky bastid. Grab anything to chase them: large fork and spoon, torch, slingshot, mace, hurl insults, make fun of their rainbow pecker head.

Whatever works to demoralize em.
