A biography based on Frank Glaser's field notes. This guy shot every critter in Alaska with numerous guns. "The Savage .250-3000 was my favorite all-round rifle for market hunting." He shot mainly mountain sheep and caribou for market hunting. "I carried a six and half pound Savage bolt action .250-3000 with three power telescopic sight, my favorite at the time (1920)." He killed a caribou with 1 shot in front of road crew, "I roughly stepped off the distance at 750 yards." Later, "I've killed moose with a wide variety of rifles, from a .22 HiPower Savage, to a .405 Winchester." He doesn't mention the HiPower anywhere else in book, but did say he bought new guns every year when times were good and sold quite a few when fur prices plummeted and before he got government shooter job. He killed wolves with every gun he carried but most often a 30-06.

I remember in the book he said nothing worked better than the Swift until it didn't do so well on a Grizzly and he thought it would be prudent to have a .30-06.

He killed more game than most could tally up in who knows how many lifetimes with a 3 power. From close to far. Hmmmmm

Great book tough man, crossing streams as they were icing up. Then build a fire dry out and carry on. Mosquito bites that got infected about killed him. And then the quiet statement about getting married. Need to get my copy back.

I'm sure he never missed a caribou at 750 yards with that rig either....

If you shoot at 100 caribou at that range and kill one: that is the one that gets remembebered and written about.

Wild Bill Hickock was a deadly shot. Never lost a gun fight.

Till somebody shot him in the back of the head...

Just sayin

A great book about a great man by a great author. I took a trip many years ago with Jim Reardon. A true gentleman and outdoorsman.

Great book often borrowed and seldom returned. His Black Rapids Roadhouse was just down the road a few miles.

Not to be picky but.....he shot Dall's Sheep for road crews....no goats in the area.

I know an Old Timer hunting guide in Fairbanks that new Frank well and holds great respect for the man's abilities.

Doesn't look like there was much size to him, but he was as tough as they come.

Your are correct, but he rolled enough Wolves that were on the run-some close and some out there-that I think there was more than luck involved. wink

Yes, he called them mountain sheep. Too late at night for typing.
And he did mention using the 220 swift on lot of critters.
There are 3 or 4 folks waiting for my copy of the book....

Yeah, way more than just luck.

A friend put me onto that book last year. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Quite a guy and a tough, hardened frontiersman. He wouldn't have survived, otherwise. Some didn't.

Frank's travel from Black Rapids to Fairbanks on the Richardson Trail [now Richardson Highway] usually entailed mostly walking the 130+ miles and some of those days he walked 30 miles.....with a pack and rifle. Try it some time!
