I've been thinking about buying one for a couple of years. Not one of those 16 inch carbines but one with a 26 inch barrel. Anyone know where I could get one? I've had no joy on Gunbroker,so I've decided to go with the best resource in the country... The Campfire. Thanks in advance gang. Bart

Make sure you get one with the shotgun-style buttstock. Those fancy curved steel buttplates are like tomahawks.

The curved steel buttplates on the Traditional Hunters are awful pointy. I almost think that was Browning's way of keeping people from loading heavy I think the first TH was a 28" barrel, then there was a "short" TH with 22" barrel, then the "trapper" abomination Ruger also made #1's in .405, and you can load them to the hilt edit to add - I was looking at other single shots today and saw a couple of others: - there's two Rugers on GB, one blued/walnut (plain wood) and one stainless/laminated - I didn't see any of the 28" Trad Hunter Highwalls. Cabelas has a bunch of the 22" "short rifle" models with crescent buttplate (ouch) and a few "sporter" models that have 24" barrel and shotgun butt & pad. You pays your money and you takes your chances...

The Sporter model has a good soft recoil pad that really works.

I have a Ruger #1H in the 405, and it shoots real nicely. I got it before the prices went up in Canada. It is blu and walnut. If you get her steppin out, she'll knock ya around a bit, but it will hold about MOA at 100 yards.
Fun cartridge and rifle.

BrotherBart, i have a 405 win, ruger #1 that i have used for years, 24" barrel skinner peep site, it will put every shot touching at 100 yrds, and have killed about every plains game critter walking & bison, plus a few semi loads of pigs, and they are easy to load for. get a 405 and enjoy the fun.rio7

The Sporter model has a good soft recoil pad that really works. I bought one of these a few months ago. Agreed. I just put a receiver sight on it (I don't like tang mounted sights). Needs a taller front sight. Figured it would. It needs one more trip to the range to verify how much too high it is, thus how much taller sight I need. Tom

Thanks for the offer. It's not a #1, though, my rifle is a High Wall.
What variation is your .250-3000? International, or a 1A, or .. ?

Nice gun, congratulations. I screwed up and bypassed a .257 Roberts like that one time too many and someone else bought it. Oops.

Bart...as has been said, try and find the Sporter Model if you can. I have one and I can not even imagine touching off a .405 with a crescent buttplate. A lot of the orifinal Winchester 95s came with that buttplate and have no clue why. TR's 95s all had shotgun butts.
From what I understand there were only a couple hundred of each variation made....and Winchester could not give them away. I got mine for $900 plus shipping and at one point I saw them selling for in the $800s...that said now it seems everyone wants them.
I love the .405s as I am a .41 Magnum shooter so all the pistol bullets can also be shot in the rifle. Recently I have been shooting cast bullets in the 1400-1800 fps range...much more fun than jacketed bullets.
If you look over on the Big Bore Lever Action Board there is a good thread there about the .405...
If I see one of the Sporters I'll send you a PM...

Checked the Completed Auctions over on GunBroker...there have only been a few advertised for sale over the last 90 days...this would have been a good buy... http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=409167991Not a Sporter but a slipon butt pad would help... Bob
